Guilt/Luck?conscience??? 26 nova

Hey guys and gals...thanks for the great site and all of the help... I'm struggling with conscience over a recent deal. I bought a 26' 88 nova spyder w/ twin 350's and got her for 7500.00 the owner of the boat is pressured by his wife to sell sell sell it, and he asked me if I'd "please give him 8k so he could sleep at night" I made the offer based on blue book values and some blistering I see in the hull...(over 100 small blisters) that requires immediate attention. I didnt have her surveyed, because it would take 3 weeks and neither myself or the seller wants to wait it out. So far, I've stuck to my guns on 7500.00, but I ask, is that a fair price, or am I seriously lowballing this boat? It's clean...no overhauls, 500 hrs, well cared for... any opinions or thoughts???

spilman 05-25-2009 12:35 AM

I'd say right on; 7k-9k

Apathetic 05-25-2009 12:49 AM

Tell him to take sleeping pills.

c_deezy 05-25-2009 12:54 AM

100 small blisters? I think I'd walk unless you just have to have it.

And I'd wait for a survey, too. I doubt his boat will/would sell that quickly...

WILDMAN 05-25-2009 01:01 AM

If he's a nice guy, go ahead and give him another $1000. You'll also sleep better. Better yet, give him $2000!

jeff32 05-25-2009 06:18 AM

if everything else is ok, it's not much $ to go boating. you can fix it by yourself with a little work! if you get the blisters fixed and you pay full price... then it's another story...

Good luck!

Audiofn 05-25-2009 06:42 AM

You are NOT low balling him at that price at all.

CMC 05-25-2009 07:02 AM

The Nova hulls were known to have blistering issues.

DONZIEBRI 05-25-2009 07:43 AM

20 yr old boat w/100 blisters. He should be losing sleep for asking 8K.

enticer 05-25-2009 07:55 AM

YOU ONLY GET FOR WHAT YOU PAY FOR.......and it sounds like your paying for problems, not a boat. 2 Wellcrafts I know of had the same problem in the same year range and needed the entire hull clean down to the fiberglass and re-gelled and painted. So, add some upgrade money to the price.

c_deezy 05-25-2009 10:50 AM

I'd say the answers are pretty straight forward.

I tried to be a nice guy when I bought my boat. Now I'm balls deep in doing stringers and transom, see my thread in the Baja section - So it begins....A rebuild thread. No good deed goes unpunished my man.

onpointe 05-25-2009 02:23 PM

thanks all

Thanks fellow boaters.... I did lots of homework on the prices before I made my offer. He was asking 14k obo... I obviously laughed at that price. It's a clean boat, and I wanted something to upgrade. I plan to put in FI zr-4 corvette 350's with prochargers, and I plan to completely gut and redo the cabin. I cant pay 100k for a boat, but I can build one that compares. Basically, I wanted the smallest boat I could get with twins. People have said not to worry about the blistering, its easilly fixed with a dremel and some epoxy??? I don't mean to sound so 'green'. I have 25 yrs boating experience, but always in sea rays...never a real speed boat, so I REALLY appreciate any/all input you guys give me.... thanks agn, and any opinions on the blisters??

Why not look at a Formula 272 then?

onpointe 05-25-2009 02:54 PM

Oh I looked at Formulas, bajas, liberators, and a few scarabs.... Anything in my price range was beat up. I cant buy a NEW boat yet...one day, god willing, I will....for now thou, I needed 50+mph speed and enough luxury for a weekend stay, and needed to keep the 'asset value' low enough. I boat the great lakes, so twins and atleast 25 ft were my big requirements. The nova is quite a sleeper...around here, we have problems with theft, etc, and the WORD scarab or formula invites problems.

onpointe 05-25-2009 02:59 PM

Enticer, I did surely figure on adding upgrade money to the price... Thats why i offered 7500 on a 14k asking price, and i absolutly stuck to that price. The owner claims to OWE more than that on the boat, yet he sold it to me anyway(it officially changes ownership tomorrow after he clears the lein). I NEED to stay 'low profile' in what I own, which is why I needed a libby or nova. I am good, I will re-do the entire cabin in a weekend, and upgrade the engines/drives this winter. Having 15k total into a boat that runs 70+ and sleeps 4 seems like a good plan???

northernoffshore 05-25-2009 04:16 PM

I hope you like chime walk. and fiberglass dust.

johnny g 05-25-2009 07:10 PM

I told you what I thought :lolhit: You are taking a beating, but at least you`re getting out cheap......so far! hehehe

Shorgasm 05-25-2009 07:21 PM

You're gonna fly by $15k...I mean you won't even know where you past it.

Looks like to me you are going to spend $2ok.Wait till winter when you have that money and see what it will buy...Oops too late.

LaughingCat 05-25-2009 10:12 PM

I know of a late 80's nova spyder that would fit your needs. it has relatively low hours, but due to lack of use, it needs engine, drive and cabin work. Since you plan to replace motors drives and cabin, it should be great. Boat is in Pinellas County, FL area. Let me know if you are interested. He'd likely do it for 7000-7500.

phragle 05-25-2009 10:18 PM

its a wellcraft...check the transom bulkheads and stringers CAREFULLY!!!!!!!!

johnny g 05-26-2009 05:52 AM

Make this guy an offer!

Need-the-Speed 05-26-2009 09:15 AM

I'd get the blisters taken care of then give the guy the bill!! If the guy can't sleep at night, I'd ask him if he'd like the boat back in his drive way....no strings attached just your money back....and THEN RUN.

Indy 05-26-2009 01:52 PM

Boats are touble, even if they're in good shape they're a headache. I see no reason what-so-ever to SEEK out trouble with this boat, it'll find you no matter what boat you have. Go to David Pascoe's site below, if this doesn't scare you away from this boat I have a bridge to sell you.

c_deezy 05-26-2009 06:21 PM

This is an effort in futility, I think I saw another thread that he already bought it....

onpointe 05-26-2009 08:13 PM

It's not bought yet....I did give a 500 deposit, but I spoke to the survey guy here in Mich today and he said WAITTTTT!!!!! He said for 100 he can tell me yay or nay...300 if i need a full work up and write up. The seller DIDN'T like hearing AT ALL that I'm planning to survey it. Perhaps he knows something I don't. I'd rather walk away and lose 600 than pay 7500 for a rotted out pos... Thanks guys for the recommends..

t500hps 05-26-2009 08:21 PM

If the seller didn't like hearing about a surveyor......then he knows something he doesn't want you to find!!!!

Thank goodness you listened to the advice given. Plus, as already said, if the person didn't want you to (or want to "wait" for) a survey that should have sent up a HUUUUGE RED FLAG.

Best of luck to you.

you got a PM ...
