Merc Verado 350 Sci
Hi!
I currently have two Merc 2.5 EFI SS engines with PCU's on my Phantom 25. There have been some electrical issues, but they are now ok.
However, the setup is very expensive to use. We pay NOK 13 per litre gas, approx. USD 8 per gallon. And one litre synthetic oil costs approx. USD 105 per gallon.... Figure the cost; 80-100 litre an hour and 3% oil..... Thats approx. USD 250 per hour...
If I run a Verado 350 Sci the fuel consumption at 4,000 rps is approx. 10 gallon an hour; so thats approx. USD 71 (regulat fuel, no mix oil).
So I consider to go back to one engine. I had a Promax 300 with SVS for many years. I am now considering Verado 350 Sci. Any experiences with the two? The rpm range fit my boat very well.
I run 88 mph with my twin set up. I expect to run 80-81 mph with the Verado 350 Sci.

If memory serves me the Verado weighs 630lbs. How much does one of your 250s weigh? If both your motors weigh say 500lbs it may not make sense to go to one Verado. How about two 300 Optimax XSs?

I have had a recent conversation with someone (a development guy used by Merc ) who ran the 350 Verado in a hi-performance manner. He described how it out pulled his 300x by a huge margin.
Our discussion then went to putting a single 350 Verado on the TUFF 28. Calculations show it would be a 87mph boat.
I hope you make the switch and let me know if this approach is going to be the new thing.

Catmando; the two 2,5 EFI weights in at 185 kilo per engine. Plus latham steering and tie bar + fuel and hydralic system below deck. Two 300XS is not possible due to overall weight and width of the boat, which is only 5,5 feet (!). Two 2,5 EFI with classic drag cowlings is 1 inch apart when doing a twin set up.
TUFFboat: Thanks for your info. When I had a Promax 300, not X, my Phantom did 76-77 mph. I had a SVS system on it, but I think that only added 1 mph on the top speed. So a Verado 350 Sci should pull the boat above the 80-82 mph mark.
Do you know how the lower unit compare to a standard Torquemaster unit. Is it bigger, will it be slower? Its no point with a Sportmaster on my boat since the speed will be less than 85 mph. I have CLE on my 2.5 EFI SS engines.
