OT: Pontiac to bring back the GTO!
Check it out - 5.7 liter V-8, 6 spd, independent rear suspension, rear-wheel drive!
Read all about it: http://www.detnews.com/2002/autosins...a01-451562.htm After we got rid of my wife's POS Grand Am a few years ago, I swore I'd never own another Pontiac, but now I'm wondering what the asking price will be... :) Thank you Bob Lutz... |
Screw the GTO
(had an old 68 GTO) I presently have a Ram Air TA 1998 (LS1) and after so many long ass years of butt F*cking Michal Knights' 82 turd burglar, they went and FINALLY did it right in 1994 and trashed the old design, Then in 1998 they redid it again even BETTER than before and now they did away with the whole damn thing WTF is wrong with them? They make that armadillo looking turd bucket thing instead of a TRANS AM? Now they are playing with a concept GTO? the holden (austrailia's GM market name) is good (mad Max's car was a holden) but WTF??? You finally build one of the nicest fastest production cars every made in history and you toss the design to build momma SUV's and that aztek armadillo thing Pontiac has lost their minds Now I have to get a vette if I want a GM sports car Guess I can now get my pontiac tattoo removed!!! Jason One disgruntled Pontiac owner |
no it just ticks me off that pontiac finally decided to make one wild ass ride out of the trans am and in my opinion (im sure ill hear flack over this) it is one of the nicest looking and one bad ass fast car (stock 6 spds doing 12.8's off show room floor with a intake lid and K&N filter)
Mine is an automatic with a 3700 stall converter and other mods and im running 11.7's with drag radials all day long now they retooled the factory in Canada to make an suv just blows my mind, end of this year when the whole firebird, camaro line is finished, no more F bodies that will be a very sad day in the automotive world dont understand, just dont understand it at all Jason |
My first really nice car was a '66 GTO and I loved it.

I hope it is better than GM's reinCARnation of the Nova and the Malibu!
|

Ummmmmm yeah,, right,,, sure,,,,, |
I had two 69 GTOs, a coupe and a convertible back in the late seventies.
The coupe had a built engine that pumped out between 400 and 500 HP. A 914-6 spun out, crashing into a ditch and a turbo carrera blew it's engine racing this car. The goat regularly ate Ferrari 308s for lunch. <ggg> Now I drive a much loved 1996 WS6 Ram Air Formula, one of 55 Red Automatics built in 1996. This model killed BMW for about five years in a row racing in the Street Stock IMSA road race series. Can anyone explain why Pontiac NEVER mentioned this??? Now the Firebird is dead because hardly anyone wanted to pay the skyhigh insurance premiums I guess. Same reason that killed the GTOs etc. It is cheaper for Pontiac to maintain their product line in high performance cars by importing a limited number of Holdens to fullfill gear heads like me. It makes good business sense, although it is a shame the American public is not smart enough to buy great cars when they are offered!!! |
Personally, As a former owner of a 67 GTO, I'd prefer they come up with another name for a vehicle and sell it based upon it's own merits and not try to piggyback off of yesteryears success. Show some originality for a change. The'll never do it justice.

Biggest problem with the Firebird/Camaro is that Ford sold twice as many Mustangs as GM did F-bodies (combined). And as Troutly noted, they can make a lot more dinero selling SUVs than they can selling Firebirds.
Now, I don't want to start a flame war, but IMHO the Firebird is butt-ugly - too many scoops/flares/geegaws for me. But, to each their own, right? Heck, I've got a friend that owns an Aztek  and I regularly see Avalanches running around, so apparently someone likes them (though I can't imagine how so many blind people got driver's licenses ;) ) I'm just glad Ford is finally waking up - the new Mach 1 Mustang is supposed to have 300+ hp. |
Fbodies have had over 300 HP since 98
the 2001-2003's have 330 and it is underated Mine out of the box had 315 rear wheel HP and engine was only supposed to have 320 Now with cam, headers, intake, catback, blah blah blah blah im pushing 440 rear wheel and my 10 bolt is NOT too happy :D But running 11.7's with 2.73 gears and 28 miles to the gallon on the highway, I think my car earns its respect sitting still Jason PS Mach 1 huh? was in love with a friends 1970 Mach1 back in High school Bad ass ride |
GTO's RULE!!
I. too am pissed about the F-bodies being dropped! Insurance can and eventually will kill all our fun! I. too had a 66 GTO, what a great car! Couldn't keep rear tires on it though.:D I now am building an 1100 hp, 14-71 blown Pro street 65 GTO with a Lenco 5 speed and 17" wide rear tires. hehe:D  It will be a street car with A/C!! Can't wait to see what the local cops will think:rolleyes: Can you say TICKET!
I do agree, find another name, that thing will never be a GTO. |
I had a 64 gto in the 80's when I was in highschool. The car had a 389, "Tri-power", and a 4 speed. Man I wish I still had that car, it was one of the fastest at my school. The car turned high 12's in the 1/4 with street tires and 60,000 miles on the motor (stock). With some better traction it would have done better. My buddy had a 440 Roadrunner that I would easily smoke. One badass car!!
|
GeeteeOOOOOOOO !!!!
About 3/4 done with a '65 GTO ragtop...all correct codes ect... should be on the road by 4th of July ?????
Will be interesting to see this new one ????? |
Looks like Cavalier! Too small for me. Wonder what platform?
|
my dad had a 66 GTO when he wa s kid and my brother bought a 68 a few years back (sold it because it didn't run right and he doesn't know **** about cars)
Honestly I rather liek eth concept images. Looks mor elieka european car. BUT it doesn't look like a GTO. I think it looks good and woudl stand on its own without being called a GTO. As for being teh offspring of a true muscle car. It will fall short and be a hack job just like the new impala... |
I've had a '65 Tri-Power convertible, 69 Judge with Ram-Air IV, and now have a '69 convertible- there is no way the new ones could compete with the old.
|
When God created cars....He had the 65 GTO convertible in mind.
When the devil seeks revenge he gives you something created by Pontiac's "stylists" in the last 20+ years. What have they been sniffing at Pontiac since the 70's??????? Each car is uglier than the one before.....The Aztec looks like the box the parts came in. T2x |
If this thing is anything like the Holdens over in Australia they will be AWSOME a little gas and these things should be good for low 12 to 10 sec runs, depending on how much gas and other bolt ons you throw at the car.... :D :D :D :D:D :D :D :D
|
I agree that the Pontiacs are getting uglier, especially the Aztec,
but the news of the GTO coming back just brings back old memories of my '66 and cruising down Bellflower Blvd, Tweety, Sunset Blvd and Harvey's Broiler in my home town of Downey. I could not imagine cruising in one of these ugly beasts they make today. |
HOPE ITS A 65 with a 540 and 4speed:D :D :D :D tripps
|
Hope it comes with the 496. The auto manufactures should forget this concept thing and bring back some of the classics. How about a 65' GTO just the way it looked. They could use 2002 technology on the original design.
I think Chrysler should "splash" a Hemi Cuda. They couldn't make them fast enough. It would be a lot cheaper than starting from the ground up with a new design. Dan |
