Be very careful launching your straight bottom boat...

...by crane:

http://www.break.com/index/failed-la...zes-yacht.html

Once again, someone did not know the center of gravity and proper way to turn the boat!

Pantera1 06-22-2009 04:59 PM

Oh thats gotta hurt : (

pachanga 06-22-2009 05:02 PM

It would seem to me that these crane operators or who ever would secure the straps in manner that they wouldn't slip. There has to be a way. That way the boat would not have to be so perfectly balanced. That slip started so slow I bet a few bungie cords could have prevented it! :D

Same video.... Nice Job!!!

I've never rigged a boat but I've rigged a lot of other things. They have spreader bars side to side on that boat but no spreader bars fore and aft. the two cable attachment points above look very close together. Without fore and aft spreaders the straps ate trying to pull towards each other. I think with another simple set of spreaders that would not have happened.

The boat manufacturer supplies the CG, usually an adhesive CG sticker is placed on either side of the hull. The slings of course have to be spaced equally on either side of the CG. Tag lines should be used to control the load. No CAPTAIN MORGAN SPICED RUM is allowed during this procedure!

McGary911 06-22-2009 07:09 PM

Wow. That's some really nice bottom paint!

Leathl_WS6 06-22-2009 07:25 PM

Ouch.. Wonder who's insurance took the hit for that one.

Sydwayz 06-22-2009 07:30 PM

Had it not been for the props getting hung up, it may have not barrel rolled on the way down, and might could have survived with a nose dive. It did hit the big ship on the way down, but only after it was rolling.

There is a reason that they put the "STRAP LOCATION" stickers on boats now days!!!

BAJA WILL 06-23-2009 10:09 PM

After watching the video, I think the rear strap was raised by thr crane, thus causing the front strap to slip. If you watch closely the rear lifts pretty far before the forward strapp ever moves. :lolhit:

Coolerman 06-24-2009 12:55 AM

hmmm, says in the video info that a cable snapped

C5Steve 06-24-2009 05:39 AM

Whoever runs break.com is a dumbass. They always get crap wrong. (Cable break.) It's hard to see exactly what happened since there is something obstructing the view. It almost looks as though it spun a little too far clockwise and touched the big ship's gunwale, which may have taken some weight off the rear strap or been just enough to make the front strap unstable and quiver, and ready to slide aft.

The best quote on Break under the video
"haha to you poor people that's a yacht, to me it's the boat I use to get from the shore to my yacht, when there's no helipad available."

Why would anyone type that????

It is funny if you are 13. I laughed & I'm 32.
Don't you ever sit on your boat & wonder what the poor people are doing?:lolhit:

There were no Cleats to tie the straps off on??

kinda what i was thinking. If no spreader anchor the lifting straps to the cleats. Would have been a pretty simple safety,

Kinda what I was thinking. Looks like a rigging failure to me. Most likely the rigging was not rated for the load. A very common mistake.

When i first got my boat i was sitting at State Dock during the poker run feeling very good about myself (i was 25) for buying a brand new Donzi 28zx, i felt like i was on top of the world and then i look up and there is a guy pulling up to the gas dock in a HUGE houseboat with 3 helicopters on the roof towing a 40 something Outerlimits, that brought me back down to reality(real quick). Btw he was a really cool guy that clearly does very well for himslef.

I laughed at it too it just seemed very out of the blue for that post to be made, especially since the other people posting could have way more than he has...

No kiddin! I get really humbled every time I go to Key West for the races or to a poker run.
I do get a kick out of thinking there are people on here that spend more money on fuel in their boat & truck going to poker runs than I make in a year. Then I crawl back into my ELB Baja & go to back to work trying to make it to that level.
