AMT Cats
Can anyone provide me some history on the AMT cats? I keep hearing DW mentioned in most of the searches along with AMT, whats the relevance of that?
I know AMT quit manufacturing hulls and sold the molds to predator. But I cant find hardly ANY pics of the AMT. Specifically the Poker Run Models.. Was there any problems with the hulls? Planing, porposing, etc? Any help or photos is appreciated. Just doin some research! |
its a good outboard boat, you want one of the DW built ones though....

DW ONLY BUILT ONE that is the You're Gonna have that
Yellowfin Yachts built about 5 or 6 LA Marine Built 6-8 Predator then bought the molds..... |
Why so many changes in ownership? Were they just struggling to sell or what?? Im leery of buying an off-brand boat as it is, but to hear that so many people have been involved with it, it really makes me wonder..
The boat is an 04 |
Which one is it?
|
why did I even bother trying to answer an outboard cat question? :drink:

I know its made its rounds on the forums but the discussions dont seem to get very far or in depth.. I know you're familiar with the boat, ryan.. Any thoughts? Bought a cruiser and looking for a poker run boat.. |
It is a 4 seater Full Canopy
It was rigged by Supreme Marine, Ft Lauderdale Built by LA Marine in Ft Lauderdale. Someone up north supposedly did some reinforcements on the hull. It was only raced ONE time. It 2.5 race motors on it that are a few years old but brand new gearcases. The owner is ready to wheel & deal on it, Steve Logan is his name. |
I know of a 32 Doug Wright that is for sale too.

I dont know if im ready to "go for it" just yet... But it does have some cool factor to it.. The thing I like about the canopies on the AMT's (and correct me if Im wrong here) is the back hatch opens up MUCH larger than the front. So if I were to remove the lids, Id be able to see behind me on our busy lake.. big plus..
|
I raced an OPEN AMT for a season. It was a great boat.
It was hell on the holeshot, but running an open boat in the rough against canopies put us at a disadvantage. Add that to my driving skills and you wind up last in a hurry. :lolhit: |
I was in love with Tantrum's yellow and grey AMT 30' o/b. Nice guy, I picked his brain about o/b cats a while back. I believe he has since sold it. Beautiful boat. There were a few nice pictures kicking around....

A friend of mine has one up here in Washington with 300x motors. The thing is huge compared to my 28 Skater. It seems like a good boat and has a comparable ride to my Skater, probably a little better in bigger water because of its size. It is the open cockpit version. They are nice looking boats.

Thanks man. I learn more and more from the pics as I go. Im glad the canopy hatch opens 180* instead of just upright..

looks good with the rear hatch removed.. At least you could see out of it!
|
Its actually not to hard to open those boats up if you wanted to get some space overhead. The first series canopy wasnt much of a canopy anyway.
Great boat to say the least. Had a blast in the old Frenzy boat with the Wahoo . . . i mean with Wahoo :D |
|
My AMT was a very capable boat. It was first the Racing Frenzy then Wahoo and now SUV overseas. It was layed up by LA Marine and made a good Kilo and Poker Run boat but i.t was layed up too light for racing. Dave sent alot of time glueing it back up after every race.
The only AMT I would buy again is "Your Gonna Have That" the only DW bulit boat. It is in my warehouse now and is bulit far superior to my former boat. It is in perfect condition and Brian has considered selling it. Or a new Predator. Arnoldo builds a very nice boat. |
I always liked Tantrum's AMT. Slick little boat.

The Predators are really nice boats by the way. Arnaldo does that hull justice for sure. |

My old AMT is for sale again here in NJ. If anyone is interested shoot me an email 300xAMT(at)optonline.net
The reason for the hull having several biulders was that the owner of AMT was not a manfacturer. Doug Wright helped design the boat and therefore built one boat (the first) which was a full canopied race . Willey of Yellow Fin Yachts was contracted to build them originally. My old boat was the 3rd AMT (including the DW) built and the 1st pleasure deck. Willey stopped building the boats because he was back ordered with his own boats and put his focus there. Andy (owner) then contracted with Lee of Deep V Cats to lay up the hulls. Lee was also building his own cats at the time. I have not looked at one of Arnolds boats yet but have heard good things about his layup techniques. If I were to buy a used outboard cat again I would buy the boat back. Since the DW was full canopy I would be buying my same Willey built pleasure boat back. email me your number if you have any questions. |
Here is Predator's link. http://predatorpowerboats.com/v2/30cat.php
I think a race canopy boat with the hatches openned up more with Small Blocks and XRs would be the perfect PR boat on a budget. |

Why small blocks on XR's versus Outboards?

No maintence, better sound, more speed, and I don't care for the look of outboards hanging off the back.
