Sonic 260, Checkmate 260zt or Velocity 260??

Looking around at some used boats (under 45k) for a future upgrade. I think the more and more research I do, I am getting more and more torn / overwhelmed.

I originally liked the Checkmate 260 because of the clean lines but, the cockpit looks the smallest out of the three. Then I read some threads about the Velocity and how it's a good rough water boat. As I was researching it, there were some threads about you have to really learn how to ride the "pad"? It's a drivers boat, true? That lead me to the Sonic Prowler. I've read how they are heavier and can handle the rough stuff, nice cockpit size and great cabin layout.

I currently boat on the upper Potomac River but would like to be able to take on the Chesapeake Bay. I would like to keep it under 30' and a STOCK single (496). Something that is built well, good size cockpit, nice cabin, and easy engine access since I like to do my own maintenance. I use my current boat a lot, 3-4 times a week.

I may be asking for a lot but, can anyone give me some insight on these three? Right now I am leaning towards the Sonic. For the size, I would like something that I can take out an not worry too much about the rough water but give a smooth ride for my passengers.

Thanks for any info!

Of the 3 I would go with the Sonic because of the layout and the rough water handling. It won't be the fastest but looks like it will fit all your needs. Also look at the Active thunder 25' and 28' Both are no longer made but can be found. I know of one 25' Tantrum for sale.

Also just to throw a wrench in the mix what about a Scarab 29'?

The Velocity would be the fastest. The sonic will have the most room and the best rough water handling.

thanks for the reply's!

What kind of speeds would I see out of the Sonic? Most I have found have the 496HO. My current boat runs in the mid 60's on GPS.

I just found a Active Thunder 25. Seems like a very solid boat. Would that be a good contender?

The active thunder is a great boat. It has a narrower beam (8') but a very solid boat.
I think a 26 sonic runs around 67-68ish with a 496ho.

Sonic would be my vote...

Sonic or the velo.. The velocity would be the fastest out of them... There is a 2002 26 sonic here in md with a Dimarco 625, for sale for 30k obo, the boat is beautiful... With that kinda power it should run well

Yeah, I did notice the narrower beam in the pics.

What would be a good year for the Sonic and reasonable price to pay? I have found a couple ranging from 2000-2004 for under 50k.

All three nice boats,

Velocity will be the fastest

Sonic will ride the best and be the biggest

Checkmate will be fast also

Of the three?? Probably the sonic
