baja 38 vs. cigarette 35 cafe racer

hi,

can you guys give me some info/oppinions regarding these two boats?

comfort in cabin/cockpit?
proformence?
overall best buy?
ect.

Thomas

SmurfOnABoat 07-21-2009 06:39 AM

Any day of the week the better buy is going to be the Cig. Better water handling, better build quality etc...

I am sure you will get alot of people chiming in on this one, no comparison to a cig though. From your stand point, you need to know what your looking for in a boat, and price range you want to buy in.

Do you have 2 specific boats you are looking at? (Like one of the 38 Baja, and one of the Cafe)

boomer 07-21-2009 06:56 AM

The BAja 38 will have much more cockpit and cabin space, The 35 Cafe is a great rough water boat. You really can't compare the two of them side by side. What do you want? The Baja has much more functional use to it then the cafe. But the Cafe is a Cigarette which has a status and a legend behind it.

LapseofReason 07-21-2009 08:05 AM

Well you can get better than the Cig. The 38 Nortech is made from the Cig. mold, they added a few steps, added a swim platform and a dif. deck there are 2 for sale under 100k and they are much faster than the Cig or Baja with the same power. The build is top notch.

seafordguy 07-21-2009 09:37 AM

Baja cabin will be better.

My wife and I get by really well in our cafe cabin and spend about 18-20 nights a year on it, but I will certainly concede that they don't have a TON of headroom but the layout of the 90's + Cafe's is REALLY neat.

Everything else (price aside) - advantage CIG.

ttl000 07-21-2009 11:34 AM

thanks so far,

my wife`s needs:
My wife would like to go on hollyday maybe 2 weeks a year, and she allso want to go on some small trips or just stay the night in the weekends.

our needs:
we both want the boat to be a place were we can go when we want som pease and just relaxe.

my needs:
i`m just the guy who wants the fastes and coolest boat i the harbour!! lol
not all true, but i want to be able to run fast and have good handling, but allso a little comfort! since i was a little guy i`ve dreamed of a cigarette.

how many feet from floor to seeling in the 2 boats?
how much more space (in cabin) in the baja vs. the cig?

BDiggity 07-21-2009 11:35 AM

if u are talking about a 38special, two different styles of boats. the 38 has about 6'2" headroom down below, full ac, can have ac & genny. it has a huge cockpit w/ option for sink & ice maker & a glass windshield for more wind buffer.

I have a friend w/ a 38 & its better when rafted up & entertaining. but underway i like riding in our cafe better. just depends on how u want to use it. the 38 would prolly been better for us (w/ kids) but i had my heart set on a cig.

ttl000 07-21-2009 11:59 AM

my heart is allso for the cig but we allso got kids, but we are talking 2 weeks a year with 2 adults & 2kids on hollyday, and the rest of the year it`s only me and my wife cruising around!

what about the hight in the cig?

LapseofReason 07-21-2009 12:15 PM

Sounds to me the boat you should look at is a 386 Sonic or a 42 Both have stand up heads and cabin, way more head room than a Cig. You have room for a gen. and can sleep 4 easy in a Sonic. They will both run in the 70's with 500hp's. The cabin in the 42 is nicer but the cockpit is bigger in the 386. A Baja is like having a Ford Exsplorer, eveybody has one. The Cig is way cool but an older boat that is going to need more work. The 38 Nortech has a huge cabin but no room for a gen. and if your going to spend more than a night on a boat you need a gen. or have to stay tied to the dock. There arnt many boats in the price range you put yourself into with the Cig and Baja but the Sonic thats better for overnighting and almost every girl loves the cabin and head on a Sonic.

seafordguy 07-21-2009 12:33 PM

My guess is the Cafe has about 4'6" -4'10" in headroom. If you are thinking of spending a week at a time on the boat with your wife AND kids than that is NOT the right boat for you.....

LapseofReason 07-21-2009 12:44 PM

Look at Black Thunders and Sonics for good sport boats for spending long times on. Nice ones can be had for around 100k. Black thunders have 6'10" of head room Sonics 6'2" unless you get the GT thunder it's less head room but I don't know how much.

ttl000 07-21-2009 12:52 PM

hmm, 4`6"

thats 135cm?

ttl000 07-21-2009 12:53 PM

my limit is 65k, so i don`t have many choices...

i live in Denmark, so i have to pay for shippng and taxes also...

LapseofReason 07-21-2009 12:55 PM

Formula 330

ttl000 07-21-2009 01:00 PM

we ar not going to spend one week at one time "on the water" we go to different harbours every day, and then we shore power...

white scarab 07-21-2009 01:05 PM

Scarab 38' is by far the best overall boat out there. Its fast, has all the bells and whistles, and its the best looking.

I am from Denmark too and have had 3 Cigarette Top Guns and now have a Cigarette 42 Tiger. You can spend a week in the Cig no problem it all comes down to what you want to use the boat for. Don't buy a boat based on 2 weeks use pr year, find out how you want to use your boat and for what and then decide which boat you want. Also factor in the budget, at that price you will have to put some money aside for maintanance and new parts. It is expensive boats to run and with older boats something will always break. Take my word for it it is not cheap to run theese things. If you like a nice steady ride and don't care for luxury go for a Cig. If you like the more comftable boat with ridequality like a Skoda go for the Baja, but know this: the Baja is not a well built boat! A friend in Denmark had one and the whole bottom delaminated and had to be changed. They are probably not all like that but it is not a quality boat compared to a Cig. Before you buy have someone who know go through engine with leak down and compression test. Take good long test drive, not just 10 minutes out of the harbour and back. If you want to spend the money there are nothing like powerboating.
Go for the cig it is awsome and if you can swing a Top Gun I can highly recomend that!

You will also have to consider the world of problems you run into if you buy a boat in the US. You will need to CE certify the boat and with the new noice and emission laws that is nearly impossible or will be very costly.
There are plenty for sale in Europe now and you should be able to get a good deal as everybody is selling now and no one is buying.

ttl000 07-21-2009 02:48 PM

thanks Jesper...

can you PM me so we can talk i danish?

i have found a cheap cig and i have contact with a mechanic i US who can change the engines to 496ho with mpi and then there will be no problems with CE certification... i hope!

but i cant seem to find any in europe at all, and i think i can save a great deal of money if i by in US, cause i only have to pay taxes ect. of the "buy" price of the boat, and nothing for the engines...! and they are alot cheaper in US, and they will be brand new then.

Hej Thomas,

Huh? :D:D:D

I had a Cigarette and currently own a Baja Outlaw. If it's a 38 then it must be a 38 Special. Big cabin and has a windshield and lot's of amenities. Much more of a family boat and can be used as a "cruiser".

I've been on and driven a Cafe Racer. There is no disputing the build quality and wave crushing ability of a Cig. Much smaller cabin though. If you are ocean boating there is no substitute (my opinion) to a Cig.

Power also makes a big difference. Both boat need a lot of power to go really fast. I think HP500's would net about 75 in either boat.

If I could trade up my 29 OL for a Cafe Racer (or Gun) I would in a heartbeat but I run the Pacific Ocean most of the time. :flag:

Jeg kender en del af de gutter i tyskland der har de her både, så hvis der er noget der du syntes er interessant, så kontakt mig så skal jeg prøve at spørge på priser direkse hos ejeren i stedet for gennem forhandler.

I will also agree with Bajafresh as well. I currently own a Baja outlaw and it's more of a all around type of boat. The 38 Baja is for sure a weekend/family style. My own 2-cent.

if you are interested, my friend is dying to sale his 38 Scarab. I did all the work for him. This boat is like brand new. Everything, i mean everything on it has been changed. He is having hard financial times and on top of it, his wife is pregnant. You can get it from him in high 60's. here is the link

i have been looking at his scarab38, but i think its to expensive, sorry!

to Jesper: i`ll send you a mail later this week

ttl000 07-22-2009 04:12 AM

i have been looking more and more at a scarab 38, and i really think it looks very nice, but how is the hull and the overall finish vs. the cig.?
i`m thinking about the construction of the boat, is a cig better built, and should the scarab be compared to the baja 38 special instead?

obnoxus 07-22-2009 06:53 AM

Id consider the 36 outlaw over the 38 special if your also looking at Cig's

ttl000 07-22-2009 11:41 AM

are the scarab 38 compareable with the cig cafe racer?

the hull looks almost the same...!

oreo11zeus 07-22-2009 12:08 PM

That is the dumbest post I have ever read on OSO

Jesper, I didn't realize you owned a fleet of Cigs!! Though you had a couple but four!? :eekdrop:

Where's the pics bro.

On the Baja VS Cafe topic....I've owned a Baja and currently own a Cig. I think you'll find many Cig owners that have moved up from a Baja and wont say a negative thing about the brand. Our Baja treated us extremely well and we enjoyed it immensely.

Like others have said, the Cabin on the 38 Special is comfy. The Cabin on the Cafe is actually a really great cabin but the head room is limited.

I personally think the Cafe is a "sleaker" looking boat. The Special is almost a sport cruiser with high freeboard and a more rounded deck than the typical flatter deck of true offshore boats. But that's just my opinion.

Either way, keep us posted on what you decide.

Cigaretteman 07-22-2009 02:38 PM

Hi Tank,

How are you? I think I saw your Cig for sale what gives?

I only have the Tiger left the others I sold long ago. There are pictures in the cigarettes the legend tread. It was a 1990 with 600HP blower engines and Bravo a 1989 with 750 Hawk engines and #3 drives and a 1992 with 525´s and TRS Of those 3 the 1989 was my favorite ride! It would go through anything, heavy as hell and only 80 MPH but rode like a Caddy in the rough!

i`m more and more into the scarab 38, it kind of looks "newer" then the cig.

there are som nice offers and i found 2 i might decide to buy..

i`ll keep you postet

Are the standard production scarabs not prone to rot? I here the transoms are made from poor quality ply? I could be wrong but are you not better off going for a larry smith or a KV.

Jesper, everything is good. Yea, the cig is up for sale. figured I'd throw it out there since I haven't been using it as much as I'd like to.

Glad things are well, you ever make it out this way look me up for a run in the pacific (assuming I still have the boat):drink:
