New 650 EFI from Young Performance

5 Attachment(s)
Here are a few shots and a quick dyno vid of a new 650 EFI that I just finished. I have been playing around with some different combos in the never ending quest for more power. This engine has a set of AFR 335 cnc heads. This is the first time that I used them, and I have to say that I am pleased. My 650 typically makes 660-670 hp. This one made 701 hp (at 5800 rpm) with only 9.4:1 compression. I usually run a little more than that. With a little tweaking to the combo, I think that it will make 720-725 hp. It has the flatest torque curve of any NA engine I have ever built. It made a peak of 650 ft lbs at 5200 rpm(which is a little high), but it made only 30 ft lbs less at 4000 rpm and still made 640 ft lbs at 5700 rpm. It never seemed to drop off after peak. It only lost 10 ft lbs over the next 600 rpm after peak torque.
I think with a few changes to the heads and cam it will be a nice package capable of making an honest 700+ hp. It will be a good alternative to my 750 efi, which is 598 ci. This one is quite a bit cheaper to build at only 540 ci. May take the next one to 555 ci.:drink: It's never enough.
Thanks for looking. Enjoy.

Very nice set up. Simple is always better.

kswest 08-24-2009 12:03 AM

What's ballpark $$$ on these?

Young Performance 08-24-2009 12:12 AM

100% Complete and ready to drop in your boat with exhaust(CMI E-tops) wiring, sending units, 10 pin Merc plug, motor mounts, bell housing and coupler, etc. is $36,500 (for this particular set up) with a one year warranty. It can be painted any custom color of your choice. The only thing that is not included is the tail pipes, since they are somewhat boat specific. If you can use standard Bravo tail pipes then they run about $750.

Good job Eddie, lots of reliable HP.

customryder 08-24-2009 10:04 AM

Eddie

why does a 540 cost a lot less to build..? are the parts that much less expensive?
just curious..

nice engine btw..

Young Performance 08-24-2009 10:34 AM

It costs less for several reasons. First, you can use a low deck block. A 4.25" crank is usually a little cheaper than a 4.5", but more so, you can use a less expensive brand of crank because you do not have as much rotational mass. I use quite a few Scat cranks in 4.25, but I will not use one in 4.5". It may work fine, but I just won't use it. A 4.25" Scat crank is about $700. but a 4.5" Lunati crank is about $1500. Rod length doesn't change the price much, but I will use a better rod in the 598. Scat, or similar, rods are about $400, but the Oliver billet rods I use in a 598 ci are over $1400. These are just a few examples. Ultimately, it costs a couple thousand dollars less.

Nice engne. Who's accesory kit is that on the front? It looks like the one out of the Eikert catalog??

Young Performance 08-24-2009 10:39 AM

It's from Hardin/Eickert. This is about the 10th version. Every one I get is just a little different than the last. They keep refining it to make it better. It is a really nice package. It's not cheap( about 3K), but I think it is worth the money. Everything is there (bolts, washers, belt, etc) and it alll fits.

I just put one on a customers engine also. Worth the extra cash for the time saved and the convenience? It is a really nice package all together.

Young Performance 08-24-2009 10:48 AM

Yeah, I think it is worth it. I could do a stock Merc plastic pump and some cheap steel accessory brackets with V belts for about 1000-$1200 and it would work. It would not look nearly as nice, you would have multiple belts to tension, they make a lot of belt dust, you have to chase down the right size belts, the right length bolts, etc. To me, just the hassle is worth the money, not to mention how much nicer it looks. Also, I think it's the best out there and I would use it just for that.

Their V belt kit is the one I used.

The ony suggestion that I would make is to send stainless bolts for the alternator bracket. They sent just regular steel bolts. I changed out to stainless.

Young Performance 08-24-2009 03:53 PM

Jeff,
I used the v belt setup in the past and it is the nicest v belt accessories out there. I still use it on the dry sump engines, since the serpentine is not set up for it. Someone screwed up on the fasteners because steel bolts are not normal. If you would have called them, they would have sent out the correct bolts. I have had that happen in the past. I had the correct hardware here but they offered to send it. Once you use the serpentine, you won't want to go back to the v belts.

Catmando 08-24-2009 05:43 PM

Eddie have you had a chance to talk to Dart about their new 765ci aluminum block? With the right parts 900hp+ should be possible with a carb or EFI.

Young Performance 08-24-2009 11:01 PM

No, I haven't Cat. I have been wanting to do a BIG cubic inch NA engine. Every time I start to plan one out, I realize that I can make more power for the same money and a lot less hassle using a 598 with a 3.3 Whipple. The parts become so specialized to do a 700+ ci engine, that the cost shoots threw the roof. You wind up using one off or very uncommon parts, whereas a 598 can be all off the shelf stuff. I have figured up the prices many times and they come out about the same. However, I can easily make over 1000 hp with a 598 ci and a 3.3 Whipple. A 750 ci NA engine making 1.25 hp/ci only makes about 940 hp. Now, it would be cool. But, I have a hard time getting people to pay for cool. They want something proven and reliable that is not that hard to get parts for if it breaks.
This is just my thoughts on a big inch NA engine. With all that being said, I would still love to do one.

Thanks Bill. I see that yours is up and running. Glad to hear it. Good luck with it. I will get a few more pics up when I get the flame arrestor on it. It has the best polish job I have ever seen.

The engine is going in a Velocity 260. I have done quite a bit of rigging on the boat to get it ready for the engine. Here are a few pics of before, during and after. I had to fill 94 holes in the engine compartment for stuff that has been moved or eliminated. Enjoy

Eddie, That Velocity should rock with that power, very nice. Doug

ZXXX Donzi 09-07-2009 10:38 AM

I hope that he has as much fun in that is I have been having in the ZX that Eddie did for me last year. We are heading out to the lake right now for a few high speed passes and a day of riding around.

Young Performance 09-07-2009 10:48 AM

Thanks, Doug. After talking to Steve Stepp (owner of Velocity) we think the boat should be right near 100 mph with the right setup. I need to play with props to see what it wants. It's going in the water for the first time today.

Have fun Bill. Talk to you soon.

Beautifull attention to detail, and setup, should be a good seller thanks for documenting it for us.

Velocities are always fast in their sizes. That rig will sing with your new engine.

Please- keep us in the loop with the picts.

Thanks Uncle D. I will post more pics later of it all finished up. I am going to run it in a little while, so I will also have some numbers.

260Velocity 08-21-2015 05:15 AM

Eddie, Very nice job!! So what was the final outcome on the top end with this HP in the 260 velocity?

bripar77 08-21-2015 09:40 AM

Could this be built using Al. Block and Heads? Roughly how much weight savings and how much money extra would that cost?
