Talon 25 info?

I am looking at buying a 1991 Talon 25 with a 454 / Bravo 1 setup.

Anything to look for in these hulls? Any known problem areas?

Anyone know if these hulls were fully composite?

Anyone know what these hulls weighed?

Any comments would be great!

Since nobody else chimed in I will. The Talon 25 was the basis for nearly every 25-26 foot cat built. It is one of the most copied hulls. Obviously , they are great boats. I haven't owned one so I cant give you any insight as to specific area's to look over aside from the normal things. Good luck!

Thanks Okie

Good boat. Gary did well with them and built a very nice boat.

Had a 1994 Talon 22' for over 7 years. As far as I know all Talons are fiberglass hulls. Excellent design and construction. Mine weighed 1250 lbs less engines. It was rigged with twin 2.5 outboards. Never had the experience of riding in a Talon 25, but saw one up close being built at the plant in Sarasota back when they were being produced. Basically Talons are pretty rare and are of great quality!

They are rock solid boats that will take as much power as you throw at them. The hatch opens with the back seat for very easy engine access.

Randy (Wildman) just put a twin outboard Talon up for sale over on S & F. He helped get this boat setup for the owner and can probably answer any questions you may have. This one will run over 100 with the 300 Promaxes. :drink:

There's also a black one over there too. ;)

You cannot go wrong with a Talon 25. I have an '87 with 300 Pro Max Mercury's and I LOVE it. Mine is the 3rd. boat out of the mold it was built for a kilo run and is the only left hand drive that I know of. There are NO stress cracks and the transom is strong after all these years. 4 paintjobs and 4 sets of motors it is a floating piece of history.

TX 427 is right they will handle the power with an I/O. I have riden in one at 115 smooth as silk.

bulletbob 09-16-2009 12:47 PM

I have a 1990 with outboards and like others have said I bought it for the build quality. they are very strong hulls. There is wood in the transom. Very fun and fast boat. Good luck with your purchase and post some photos when you can. Bob

Yup! Just got this one on a new boat trade.

I think I am going to need mufflers as the cops up here really ticket for noise, they have db meters on thier boats.

Bob - is the transom the only place with wood?

Well well look what I dug up out of the archives.

Great find Apple A Day... Wow would you look at that, he did say something about Talon used this boat for something. I think he said it was used for a magazine review, I guess maybe it was used for literature too.

Somewhere I believe I still have a whole literature packet from Talon I got years ago, I will have to try to find it. Back then I almost bought a brand new Talon 18.

I did send him a deposit already but if anyone from MS that might want to go look at the boat and give me a heads up is more than welcome too.

orthos1 09-17-2009 09:11 PM

I had a 1990 talon with a 870 hp bravo 1 from Bravo drives inc. She ran 122 and ran solid as a rock. I sold it in 1998. I just bought it back in May of this year and presently has a 525 efi being installed in it. To say I liked the boat would be and understatement.

Like the man says Great Product

Apple a day 09-18-2009 08:29 AM

DjMikeyc go buy the boat you will not be disappointed.

DjMikeyC 09-18-2009 09:41 AM

Apple A Day - Just a little nervous about buying a boat site unseen. Current owner has offered to meet me in VA for a small gas fee. I'm online right now looking for a place to meet him. Anyone know a nice place to stay right on I81 in VA? Probably going to make this a 2 day trip. One day down, sleep over, meet him the next day and buy boat if it is as advertised then drive home that day. I told him if its not as advertised I'm going home without it! He says no worries. Don't want to make the drive for nothing, ya know.

If anyone does live in the MS area and wants to look at it, PM me for contact info.

Apple a day 09-18-2009 10:36 AM

If it is as advertised you will be happy. Hope it works out well. Keep us posted.

Ok, need to vent a little if you guys don't mind...

Owner told me on the phone that the boat was in great shape, with new interior 3 years ago, and I wont find a thing wrong with it. And you guys have seen the pics, wonder when those were taken? Maybe 3 years ago when the interior was done?

Someone from scream and fly was nice enough to go look at this for me today and he called me while he was there looking at the boat and this is his impression of the boat...

Boat has been visibly neglected, very dirty and dull (ok, this does happen), you can tell the stripes have been painted and they are now faded, not sure if they will come back with buffing. Boat needs major cleaning. You can tell it has been sitting outside with no cover - interior - vinyl is hard & stiff and starting to crack (so much for the interior) I guess he forgot to tell me it has been sitting uncovered in the elements. One sponson has a few chips, rubrail on one side is messed up. External steering ram is leaking. Trailer - is sunken in the ground sitting on the axles. Boat looks as if it has not moved in a very long time. Bunks might be rotting and carpet is peeling off so the bottom of the hull in the tunnel may be scratched up from loading.

Owner stated he was using the boat this summer!

What do you guys think this boat is worth with this new info? And what do you think it will take to bring it back? New interior $$$? Paint stripes $$$? External steering $$$? Trailer overhaul $$$?

And do I trust him the engine actually runs? I knew it would need some work, but I wasn't expecting this from speaking with the owner on the phone.

And do I worry that is has been sitting outside for who knows how long? makes me wonder about hull issues.

Sorry guys needed to vent a bit - all thoughts are welcome.

Ask for allot of detailed current photos. If you like what you see, meet him at a lake and run it.

Apple a day 09-21-2009 09:21 AM

That is really too bad. Glad you had someone check on it. I got lucky with mine as I have known the last two owners.

DjMikeyC 09-22-2009 09:37 AM

Some things came up I have to take care of so I will not be buying this boat. Anyone that is interested check the Jackson, MS craigslist.

blueamerican 09-23-2009 07:46 PM

I had a 22 that was fantastic, could not afford a 25 so bought a 26 American Offshore which was splashed off the Talon...
