Update from Bob -

"Incredible experience today.
Highlights: Intercepted and stopped by Cuban Coast Guard 6 miles out.
Circled us for 10 minutes with guns out while awaiting instructions from superiors.
We had quarantine flag up and kept repeating Canada/ M Hemingway.
Then they escorted us there.
All good now. We feel safe and are going for dinner soon."

Good luck and have a safe trip back to the U.S. Hopefully after you leave a tsunami will wipe out the entire island. I'm not getting into politics, but if they dont want us. then good for us. It must be a wonderful country though, people putting newborn babies on floating fences just to get out. Go USA. I'm sorry, I write it like I see it. Anyway, back to the main issue, good luck to Bob and his crew. I'm sure lots of great experiences on this trip. Looking forward to hearing more stories, hopefully no more CG close calls

You had Mariel Hemingway on board?
Didn't realize she was such an icon there.

So now you really know what the Cuban Coast Guard looks like. (inside joke)
Glad you made it!
Looking forward to more stories.

Got my laptop and even have Wi Fi in my room.

The CG boat was a 36' +/- center console w trips. They thought they had incepted a drug boat. At the marina they went thu every suitcase and every compartment on the boat and had a drug dog on there for 10 minutes. Nothing of coarse. As time went on they came to realize we were not bad guys and things loosened up. One spoke decent English and I said to him : You know we let you catch us, eh? After nodding in agreement and having a good laugh, he patted his gun and we laughed some more.

More later.

Terry your too funny. Is Mariel still around ? LOL

Yes I had a closer look at the Cuban CG and what it's like to look down the barrel of a AK - 47 (?) from the wrong end ! LOL

Bob, hope you have fun, I have wanted to go for a few years but as an American can't,,,, well maybe, I have heard you can fly from Cayman and for some reason your passport doesn't get stamped, but I have not wanted to try that yet.

Bob,

Glad you made it in ok. Sounds like an adventure. Can't wait to see some pictures.

You should do a bar crawl through Old Havana. We stayed at the Santa Isabel right in the heart of it and had great times looking for the best bar. And found some good ones.

The National has a nice outside patio area for Mohitos but the best restaurants are elsewhere. We ate out every meal and found three very good restaurants you should try. The best two are private "Paladore's". The La Guarida is really great (don't worry about the entrance and the stairs up-just hit the buzzer at the unmarked door at the top) and the Don Carmella is over by Morro Castle and has nice outdoor seating. The La Oriente Restaurant (not oriental food) is in San Francisco Plaza in Old Havana. You will feel like you stepped back into 1958 when you go in. All great but if you choose one go with La Guarida for the whole experience. (they all have toilet seats and paper)

Have fun and let us know how it's going.

David
