Engine education needed please
 

Sorry for such a basic question but I was wondering if someone can direct me to an older post or help me understand what the best advice is for a rebuilt engine…

If I buy an older boat with either a 454 or 502 and let’s say I want around 500hp what should I do? By a new or rebuilt performance motor (if so what kind) or have the old one rebuilt and modded?

What kind of price range and best bang for the buck? I would want something that’s durability as well…


Also would anyone know of a good tech around the north Texas area?

Depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for moderate performance, rebuilding an existing engine will work fine. Just have the work done by a reputable marine builder. Beyond a certain point, about 600hp, you will need so many specialized parts including aftermarket cyl. heads, crank, rods, pistons and maybe even block, that it might be better to start fresh and sell your existing engines.

It depends on what boat you have and how fast you want to go. 500 hp might not do what you want it to.

buy a 502 short block upgrade the cam and heads and you should have a good motor. 454 and 502 acc. are interchangeable.

You're putting the cart before the horse. Find a boat to buy and then worry about what you might want to do. Better yet, look for a boat that won't need an engine rebuild. A rebuilt engine does not add that much value to boat, but it cost a lot to do.
