Mild 496 vs Stock 502 (what would you do)
If you had the choice of these 2 motors...what would YOU pick and why?
Option 1: built 496 (not too radical) with (I'm guessing) about 430-440 hp. The motor is beautiful, stainless lines, powdercoated covers, etc... Very attractive and would look great in this boat. I'm told it will probably need valve adjustments a couple times per year, and likely need more maintenance than a stock motor. Option 2: Reman 502 (415 hp - bone stock). Nothing fancy...drop in a 502 and go. Change the oil once per season and be done with it. Option 2 will probably save me a little $$, but I'm not sure if that really matters that much. I doubt it will be much $$ difference in price. I'm torn. On one hand...the HP is not that much different between the 2, but on the other the 502 is "stock" and the 496 is not. |
The 502 has stronger internals and is a much better platform for when you get the need for speed. I've got a 502 and wouldn't even consider anything else.
By the way the 496 is dead and Merc is bringing back the 502 for 2010 (albeit with cats). It'll have 430hp. |
Easy choice. 502

I'm guessing the 496 is a stroked 454?
Either way for the minimal hp difference i'd go 502. |
The new (reman) 502 in stock form is the way I've been leaning when I think logically/sensibly.
But then again...since when is owning one of these freaking boats EVER been considered a logical/sensible decision? |
Why would you want to adjust valves a couple of times a year? Not me, I'd rather be out playing. Boats are enough hassle when everything is working fine, go with the one that is less fuss. Not enough hp to make a difference anyway. 502...no brainer.
