37 OL trips vs twins
LOOKING FOR SOME ADVICE...what are the handling characteristics with trips vs twins.. I heard some info, but source was not as reliable as to someone who might have been in a trip boat or someone from the OL factory.
Also heard twins likes a lil tab around 55-65mph only in a bravo boat due to diff. COG.. Anyone ever put any Arnesons on these hulls. Thanks Jeff |
I dont know about triple 37's but I can tell you about triple 42's having been in two if that helps.

Ive been in a trip 525 42..Mike driving, Fred and a few others in the back..went through 5' at 70 mph and as we were coming in to the inlet..toughed 80.. It was a rough ride due to the layup..but none the less, you can't have it both ways with out a compromise. Very Nice boat. Jeff |
boat seems too small for trips.. i've only been in ones with twins and for it's size it's a great running boat, hands down...

One big difference will be the resale value. Tripples are DOA.
|
I would convert it to twins..sell off all the motors and drives, and do it right..just curious as how the ride (mannerisms) was with trips...and if I can get the boat at the right price.
|
the 37's are a big boat, I cant wait to see what you do with one of them, they have a ton of possibilties. good luck.

Did you see the 98 that was converted to twins, they did a great job.

37 Outerlimits on yachtauctions.com
asking $70k, offer 50k. Supposedly a few more will be available. a 42 GTX was cheap. |

Triples vs twins, The triple boat is a wave crusher, rides on rails at top speeds and can dock really easy in cross wind because of the third motor. Down side, they dig a big hole and take a while to get on plane, tabs are a must to start but I pulled them all the way up after that. The boat doesn't want to be at certain speeds around 45-50 mph the boat porpoises and needs the drives tucked and some more tab. The boat really prefers three blade props other wise you get to much lift. There is no resale value on the triples that why I pulled the center motor and drive and converted to twins.
Jeff you want to know anything else just ask. |

There were only 4 built mine, the Tazmanian Devil boat and these two
|
The conversion sounds like a big job to me, keep your eyes open for a nice twin boat if that is what you want.
If you end up with a twin bravo boat, make sure it has the ext boxes. |

I've been on a few that have bravo's with extension boxes and a few that don't. FWIW, I felt the 37's without extension boxes rode a little better.

Just a beginners question, if you take a triple engine boat and convert to twin does insurance consider it a twin? Or do they frown on this and still rake you over the coals?

No bobbing or porpoise from what I experience on hull #3! :) I'm no OL expert, just speaking from what I've been on. |

Of the ones I know here locally, Wild Child doesn't and neither did my buddy's which is hull #3. I don't think Talkstory had them either???

I think the 37 still rides great without boxes but it just seems to handle/ride a little better with the boxes and also be a little quicker. Just my opinion. It could also differ from boat to boat I guess. |
Cant touch this 38 PP runs boxes also... John stated that at upper speeds it adds length to the boat aiding in some stability.

I bought one with boxes because I listened to guys who are much more knowledgable than me and told me that boxes is the way to go.
