HD Camera In Boat Filming Question

I have a SONY HDR-XR200 camera ( http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665736696 )that I have taken on a lot of rides on the MTI but it seems that the camera has so many electronic image stabilization and auto focus features that it just chases itself focusing and anti vibrating on rides, making it a less than stellar video experience.

I have turned the image stabilization off which helps and this morning I messed with the auto focus and turned that off and will try that but man it is driving me crazy.

I have a hard mount to the cockpit which I could rubberize but I am not sure if it would help...

Anyone with knowledge and worthwhile suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
GL

When it is held by hand it does a good enough job;

But we went out yesterday for a ride and once the boat gets running it is just blurred to sh!t!!! ;

Your going to need to get a fixed lens. Most of the problem is from high vibrations. You can pick up a lipstick camera that records to a seperate unit like we use in our whitewater racing. Make sure you don't get a camera that has a rolling lens for example the lens is on springs or has a gyro for stablization. The camera with a stable fixed lens runs around 500.00 that includes the recording unit also. The now make them in HD and also record to memory cards.
Here is a picture of a fixed lens onboard lipstick camera. These are what we use:

Here is footage from that camera:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was some video, it was clear and had great engine sounds. That is what Offshore Powerboat Racing needs on all the race boats.

Try VHOLDR.com small HD camera no wires.
Not a boat video but this might help give you an idea.

The 1080 HD is also coming out in the Contour brand in November, I will get a second one for the rear shots also! Actually I will put the 108HD inside the cockpit and put the 720HD I have now in the back!

I've been using one of their 380's since 2000 and it's worked well. I'm ready for higher resolution, but the camera has been rock solid and the image has been nice and stable. I've beat the hell out of this camera.

I read on their site that 520 is truly the highest resolution that you can get. Anyone comment on that?

ziemer 10-08-2009 10:33 AM

The GoPro camera's are the chit. ;) For the money you can't beat 'em. Here's a link to some footage from one mounted on the top of a friend of mine's drag boat. I believe he was using the suction cup mount. Skip ahead to around 4 minutes or so and he gets into some full passes which are in excess of 100 mph.

You can buy the full kit for around $150 now. :drink:

I tried turning all the compensating stuff off also and it still did'nt work, finally someone told me that the lense is on springs so even if all the compensation stuff was off the lens still sprung around like this at the end of the clip that was taken with that Sony Cam:

The only way it worked good was if someone held it like this;

and this;

So I went to the Contour deals since then and I am getting better results at least for a fixed mount point and forget type of Cam.

Yep....I agree that it probably wont' work in that way. Sorry my good man! I didn't have time to read the whole thread but the one I sent a link on is totally solid-state (flash). There is no hard-drive. Sounds like you got it all worked out! Fixed cam is great. The one I linked is great for everything else.....kids going down the slide.....it's a nice replacement for the 8mm movie cam my dad had. :)

Now all you guys need to do is connect up wth one of my microwave transmitters and we can post live onboard video into our race broadcast. I'm not so sure broadcasting the onboard audio would allow for anything less than an "R" rating though

They have it available now for $40. I will get one for one of the two camera I will point backwards from the mount already on the exterior.
Then we will clearly see Doc John in it next summer! ;)

We're installing a solid state system, I like the casing of http://www.vholdr.com/contourhd/accessories,
after reading the tech specs I don't think it has real time a/v output hookup (planning to use the rear view
cameras connected to 9" -or 7" HD Monitor's replacing our mirrors)

I'm not happy w/the dimensions of the HERO, however it does have real time a/v hookup that can split to the
monitors, solid state storage and stream via 3G Network to supercat racing, just a thought.

Camera Connectors & Cables
HD Motorsports HERO
* HDTV Out: HD NTSC & PAL (component cable incl.)

ps: It's a blizzard up here, I'm watching http://www.supercatracing.com/webcast.cfm :Score-101010:
