Make sure it runs 3400 rpm as an absolute minimum at wot, look for discolouring around turbo, this is usually an indication that the engines are overpropped, that is about the only thing that will kill these engines,Talk to whoever done the servicing on these motors, other than that they are prettty much bomb proof, what hours are on the engines?

Yanmars are the most incredibly durable engines I have experienced, I have yan 415's in my magnum, They top out around 3400 rpm, in my case, but very smooth very durable and pretty much bullett proof!

my experience is very, very good. they are durable, relatively simple, compact & light and excellent on fuel consumption. if they have been maintained properly, i'd say they are a + for the boat you're looking at. much better than volvos IMO...

What drives? Anything over 315hp and you can forget Bravos.

I may be mistaken, but I think the 40 formula with the 440s was an inboard boat. The 440s are great engines and very durable. The turbo's should have a light gold color to them. If it getting to be a dark gold, then they are getting pretty hot. I would make it a point to have a yanmar dealer do a proper sea trial if you buy the boat, to check boost, rpms, and exhaust temps. Also have them check to make sure the fuel screw seals have not been removed. If they have you will definitly want to make sure you have the engines test to make sure the exhaust temps are not way up.
