Dual Fuel system
 
MIT is working on a small gasoline engine to replace larger diesel engines, while maintaining torque and reliability. They are using very high boost levels and two fuel systems - one with standard low octane unleaded, and the other with ethanol. Under normal operating conditions, the engine runs on the unleaded; but when additional power is required, the second system starts and injects ethanol directly into the cylinder. 500hp/700tq from a gas hybrid system is an excellent result. This system will certainly eat into diesel's popularity on fuel price alone. However, a diesel's tq/hp ratio is very close to 2/1, so the heavy hauling(30,000lbs and up) will for the most part still be done by diesels.

But the small truck market(think Ranger) up to the Class Six(F650) segment will be revolutionized by the 500/700 and smaller motors.

FOND DU LAC, Wis., June 11, 2009 – Mercury Racing is pleased to announce the release of the DualFuel 1200 SCi. A second onboard Propulsion Control Module (PCM) microprocessor enhances the versatility of the popular 1200 SCi –allowing owners to switch from the required 112 AKI race fuel at 1200 h.p. to the second PCM which enables the engine to run on 89 posted pump octane (R + M)/2, or (95 RON) International fuel rating fuel at 1025 h.p.

The fuel requirements for the Gen 3 850 SCi sterndrive engine package have also changed from 91 posted octane (R + M)/2 or (98 RON) International, to a new minimum posted octane requirement of 89 (R+M)/2 or (95 RON).

Mercury Racing Engineering made the fuel requirement changes in response to the limited availability of fuels with the higher octane ratings at marinas and on-water facilities around the world.

The 1200 SCi and 850 SCi fuel requirement updates follow running changes made to 600 SCi, EU662 SCi and 700 SCi models earlier in the year. The revised fuel calibrations do not adversely affect engine life or performance.

Both the DualFuel 1200 SCi and Gen 3 850 SCi qualify for the recently announced Mercury Racing Lucky 7’s Sterndrive Promotion. From May 29 through August 28, 2009, pricing on select sterndrive engine packages is rolled back to 2007 levels.

skater is putting 4 fuel tanks in dennis new cat, it will have 2 130 gal tanks for 87 octane for when the boost is turned down to 1100 hp then it will have 2 50 gal tanks for when you want to go real fast and turn the hp up to 1600
you will be able to flip a switch on the dash and the computer program will change and the fuel will switch over.
the cool part is you will be able to change it on the fly.

Interesting, in fact the sequence of arming and activation seems relative to incorporating your two speed transmission in total design. Of course, it's understood you've thought of that.

Another possible benefit includes insurance. It may be argued that because the system is designed to operate in mode "A" until specific parameters are met, the result will be lesser speed. When specific parameters are met the system will switch to mode "B", resulting in greater speed. However, the psychological value includes an automatically controlled reminder that the system is now/about to use fuel that may be lesser available, durability of components (engine,drives and etc.) is being effected and cost of operation has/is increasing.

We have been searching for concepts/design to consider as we build a set of spare engines. The Dual Fuel system is one that we consider interesting, in pursuit of durability.

It would be interesting to hear comments from others.
