Scarab 2 step hull with 500EFI's or 525SC's
:)
Alright, I nixed the idea of a 38 w/ 502's - too slow. So I'll be spending a little more but I m looking at clean models w/ these engines. Any comments? Speed ? Handling? Reliability?What difference do extension boxes make if any? Thanks for all the comments for my last question. |
Keep in mind that 525SC's will need 92 octane fuel. They are great engines, but will be thirstier and are a little cold blooded compared to 500EFI's.
Just curious, why are you looking at 38 AVS's if you have a 2005 42 Fountain??? |
We live in Houston and go on both inland freshwater lakes as well as offshore. I dislike trailering and would just prefer to keep two boats in the two separate areas, which are about 100 miles apart.

525SC intake manifolds do no like salt water and they are near impossible to find used.

It seems everyone favors the 500EFI. But some had valve issues, right?

Like SM said, the carbed 500HP's had the major issues with valve springs. Lots of them broke and caused major problems. Pretty much any engine with a .600 lift+ cam, like the 500EFI has, should have the springs replaced in the 250 hr range.

I think a 38 TG with 525SC's and 3A's is just what you're looking for!!:eek::drink:

Just to clarify, valve spring issues. Carb'd 500's had more problems than the EFI's from what I've heard. There is a TON of information on here regarding this if you perform a search. I think it was just a bad batch of springs from China that was the culprit. Swap them out at 250 hours and you should be fine. Shogrens used to have a clean 38 Scarab AVS with 500's that would be on my short list if I hadn't just bought one! I don't see it on their site now, maybe it sold?
