Opinion on a black boat
We're in the process of building a new line of 30 foot flat deck offshore sport boats. The first will be pulled from the mold around mid January. The plan is for the first is to be black. Two reasons for this. First, black will show the quality of the mold work which we take great pride in and want to show it off. Second, we have planned to install a real trick custom peanut butter cockpit interior, we also have a local plating company on board who is ready to start plating all of the cockpit hardware .This will include bezels, shifters, billet switches, raymarine display facia, cup holders, steering hub, steering wheel, pretty much everything.
The boat itself is planned to be all black gelcoat, then, black primer, black ppg and clearcoat from the chine up over the deck to avoid oxidization and in the event of grtting scratched, it wouldn't show much. Keeping the gel bottom for durability off and on the trailer. Trying to get some feedback from a sales point, how many people really would want to own a black boat. We plan to build a couple more over the next few months which will be white gel. On a side note, the cost of goldplating on #1 will be a minimal charge on top of the cost of the hardware as this is being done as a semi promotion. |
One of my favorite boat is a black Scarab. This was a good thread a while ago.

Hot deck, no bare feet lol
|
Not for me. My feet are still burning after hopping on the front deck of a dark red Formula to tie it up this summer. It felt like stepping onto a campfire. One would require shoes to get on the deck at all times. I would never buy a black boat.
|
I had a red boat and had to wear gloves and shoes moving around on the deck. I can't imagine how hot a black boat would be.
Munky Shaffer of the Rock group Korn had Shockwave boats build him a black boat. He had it on the market over three years before it finally sold. |

Do black hull sides and transom, but leave the rest white.
|
|
I've had two black nordics so far, and I love them.
|
I would never own a boat with a black deck. Hull sides are fine, but IMO would show every water spot and minor rub mark.
|
Not a chance! Not worth all the hassle of dealing with a scalding hot bow. So many times you have to jump up there and I couldnt imagine how hot it would be thru swimtrunks or if you jumped on there with bare feet....NO THANKS!!
|
There was a all black Skater at Cumberland poker run with a red interior this year. It looked bad as hell.
|
Ask the Sunsation guys. They still have that black 43 that they are trying to sell.
|
My next boat will be black, can't get a badder looker boat IMO...
does sound like the deck walking will be an issue, but that's what the crew's for :evilb: |
Black is the best looking color until it gets wet, then it just looks dirty. I had a P29 Scarab that had about an 8 inch wide stripe on the bow that was black and you couldn't even touch it when the sun was up. Yes a black boat looks cool but thats it everything else sucks about it and you have less of a chance to sell it. Donzi built a black boat for the stupid Miami Vice movie and had to paint it to sell it.
|
No for 2 reasons. First, the gel gets so hot, it weakens, expands and buckles leaving a permanently cracked surface. All dark colors will do this but black is the worst. Second, it oxidises so bad, you can't keep it black and shiney without daily waxing.
|
Not a chance I'd ever think about buying a black boat, GREAT deal or not. Looks great on a trailer IF it's always been stored indoors, that's the only plus side to owning one.
Insane how bad a black boat can look after a hour on the water not to mention the heat factor and problems associated with that. |

Other than that it's too hot, ok for the hullsides but I'd never buy an all black one. |
Might want to check this thread:

Other colors, logically in between. Plastic elastic limit on polyester resin (std laminate) 146 degrees. Theoretically, your black boat is about half as strong at noon as it is in the evening. Food for thought.....

Even though black boats look great in person they don't show as well on photos
|
For me, no. For my Dad, yes. He has owned many black boats and loves them.

They did change the interior from black to silver but not the paint.
|
Well they are half way there.:drink: The deck would look good in silver with maybe a dark red boot stripe

I'd be much happier if Mirage did the side of my boat black all the way to the back. Guess I stuck with the 1990 look , unless spend some $$$ to redo the gel . Black is beautiful !

The Black Biotch.
Wouldn't want it all black, but I am real happy with it the way it is. |
I would never consider a black boat!
Black sides/stripes etc. sure, but all black deck etc? No way. It might look cool and different, but boating to me is all about enjoying time on the water, hot sunny days etc. Black + sun do not work. I had a dark red boat in the early 90's and learned to work with it, but would never go back! |
Thanks for the input. This is exactly what we're looking for as we had the same concerns. The plan is to put out a wicked a$$ boat but it needs to be practical. The black boat completely outfitted with high polished gold plated harware would look very trick but, we're going with opton B and the black will be special order only. I'll have some pics up soon, don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet.
|
Well this thread made me decide against painting my boat blue like I was gunna good input
