2.3 Whipple supercharger ??

I rebuilding a 22 Donzi classic with a 454. I own a Whipple 2.3 supercharger and never went the supercharger route, with all my 20 years of racing offshore powerboats.I'm looking at getting 650 ponies and my engine builder says "Junk the Supercharger".Whats your opinion ??? Thanks, Stan

junk your engine builder. I have been running a pair of 2.3's for 4 years now and they have been no trouble.

Why would anybody in their right mind say to junk a supercharger in a marine application. If you own it... use it! ... You wont be sorry.

I like both mine.
Sounds like your engine builder is scared of building something he doesn't understand.

stan, loose the [ENGINE BUILDER].2.3 whipple on a 454,650 hp by accident.

you can get 650 hp on a 454, without a supercharger you will need some great cylinder heads, intake, carb, big cam, and higher compression ratio, you will have to turn more rpm's with it, and your idle rpm will be a bit high, so i would go with the supercharger, it will idle like a champ, and give you all the power you need

I DIG IT !! 12-25-2009 11:16 AM

X2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 ...... Whipple makes a great product! get a real builder and put that baby on. You will love it. I have one on a 496 and it really woke it up

Blowers are the way to go.:drink:

5-6 psi is all you need, the engine will be fine... now the outdrive is another question...

Strip Poker 388 12-25-2009 12:02 PM

Why is the engine builder saying to not use the blower, something wrong with it?

You will regret not using it!!!

I see it both ways.

Ive owned and screwed around with blower engines for 15-20 years. Cleaned belt dust and replaced holed pistons more times than I would have liked to and learned a lot in the process.

The whipple is the best of breed for sure, but unless you commit to injection Id stay N/A (actually injection vs carbs)

There are many reasons to prefer a strong injected but not blown engine. Cost is not one of them.

Assuming equal bottom ends- N/A will cost equal if not more money per HP than a comparably equipped Whippled unit. Without a blower you need to spend very serious money on heads valvetrain & exhaust combos to make any real ponies.

It's about engine building theory, neither way is "wrong".

Given you already own the whipple- why not use it?
