Default 496 Mag sitting for 2 years

Hello Everybody,

I am getting back into boating after not having a boat for 5 yrs.

Currently looking at new 2008 Stingray that has a 496 mag. Volvo in it. This boat has been sitting on the showroom floor
for aprox. 2 yrs.

Do I have to worry about any long term effects from this boat
sitting this long ? Engine issues are my main concern.

Thanks in advance.

outside of stale gas if it has been in a show room i doubt you'd have to much to worry about. Change all the filters and flush the system if you can and change any other fluids. You will be happy with the Volvo hardware for sure, they build some dependable stuff.

As Glassdave said I think you'll be ok with that type of time line and storage type and usually the manufacturers warranty should still apply if the dealer has not preregistered the boat in most cases. I would push the dealer on that requirement for warranty anyway.
I am sure most likely you won't ultimatly be happy with the 375HP of the mag type engine and the stock Volvo propping gaps, but a little good prop work, and a Raylar 103 kit will get you up to a HP level that will make you happy!

Best Regards,

As long as we are on the subject i have a little smallblock with cmi s on it that i have not started in 3 years. I never capped off the exhaust and the boat has been sitting tarped outdoors but the exhaust is outside of the tarp. Its about 3 miles inland from the Gulf. I have been a bit worried about now lately. Whats your take on it. Maybe rusty valves or stuck rings? Should i atttempt to start it after changing the oil or am i looking at tearing it down?

My recipe:
Pull the plugs, spray WD40 into each cylinder, turn it over by hand. Drain the oil. Take off both valve covers and refill with oil by pouring oil over all the valvetrain. Put the valve covers back on and then crank it over with the starter but with the plugs out until you get oil pressure. Put the plugs back in and try to start!

Whats the chance that the cylinder walls have some rust where the exhaust vales were open and will it hurt the rings rolling it over if there is?

do tell do tell, always lookin for educational info on these things. There really isnt much on the Volvos out there. I have been happy with all the ones I've had. The drives are bullet proof.

Thanks for all the replies.

I will make sure the fluids are fresh if I pursue buying this boat. It is between this 2008 and ordering a new one.
I like the price on the 2008, but it is not exactly what I want.

Ray, I have checked out your website and read a number of
your posts. Appears to be a very impressive line of products and services. I will certainly keep you in mind as an upgrade
in the future. (You can never have too much hp)

Thanks again,

Clark

remember if you buy a 2008 you better get a smoking deal!
because when its time to sell no one cares that you bought a 2 year old new boat they will look up value of a 2008.
been there done that.

as far as the engine sitting i dont think you have anything to worry about.
