New Magazine Idea
So I think boating needs a new magazine and I wondered what everyone else thought.
I am thinking something popular hot rodding or Hot Rod except way more possibilities. Here are the topics it could cover. Boat shows Maybe a poker run schedule Rebuilding old boats(obviously the market is soft now and one mans debt is another mans dream(or debt) I mean articles like oh we found this old (not really that old maybe 10 years) whatever for a steal now lets do some budget powerplants and see if we can build a reliable offshore on a budget (words that don't probably go hand in hand) could do a yearly engine roundup like has been discussed with a dyno and a bunch of engines one test boat(company owned of course)First they are dynoed then they areput in the test boat and run them so many miles same boat same dyno similar temperatures etc. (yes this could take weeks but that is why it is done once a year. A section for bolt on upgrades pullys, ecms etc. could have like a readers rides or meet the owners section. Maybe a budget build off see who can find the best deal and get the most performance for the least amout of money. Obviously this would include bigger boats 30-50ft but it could also have a lake boat section 20-30ft And obviously tons of pictures. I just think the current offerings for this stuff although good for some people miss an entirely different crowd One magazine imparticlular the only reason I glance at it in stores is to see if there are any over the top boats in there. What I seem to gather and correct me if I'm wrong is that people are more apt to keep there boat or buy a used boat in this market. There are obviously some great deals out there to be had for used stuff deals that may be great to someone with mechanical aptitude and time but maybe not so great to someone without this stuff. And I think as people buy these deals and make decsions about engine builders parts suppliers etc they need decsions based on a level playing field. Also this could help a used market that is very soft which in turn would help the new market as people unloaded used boats. Imagine you have an individual who loves to go fast but realizes there is a speed limit on the road he comes across this magazine and says to himself hey I love to work on cars and know how but boats may be a different story. Hey I can learn something here. |
magazines are on their way out, not many publications left, they all went broke. So no your idea is a bad one, why won't you call me . what is your name?

Jim you do not know me I spoke with you once maybe twice. I have added another post on the other site to say that most of what I said was hearsay. Just leave it alone your life is an open book and many people around these sights know you.
And on my idea if you feel that because others went broke so this is a bad idea that would be like saying everyone should quit making cars it is going by the wayside because GM and Chrysler had to file BR. Saying the idea is bad is fine but the reasoning in illogical. |
Haha db watch your back side he seems aditment:party-smiley-004:

i dunno what else is going on on other site, and dont really care...but I like reading informative magazines pertaining to real life situations. I think everything you mentioned would be good to put in a magazine...
|
Do you think it would bring new people to the sport or bring people back. Do you feel that there has been anything out there that does what I mentioned already. A couple more questions

Scott who? Who would the reputable business man be?

Hey db, I like your idea also, I have even told my wife that I should present something like you stated to a show on SPEED tv. We do trucks, cars, motorcycles, etc. Why not boats?!! I think some people feel like boat work has some "black magic" stuff going on sometimes. It is all pretty simple if people could see some of it....AND vice versa some stuff people have NO idea what it takes to fix or repair certain things on boats. my .02 AND speaking of that HIGH end magazine, I'm kinda tired at looking at $500,000+ boats that 98% of the people can't afford.
|
now why would anyone choose a mag over this stuff..:food-smiley-007::drink:
|
Because it would be all of us in the mag. with our boats and our stories! well.......it could be.....maybe??????
|
db71,if someone will publish it,i will buy it,reading about boating helps me get through the long winter.:coolcowboy:

I was thinking tv spinoff also so that is funny you mention that.
I am thinking team effort people on these sites write the articles someone is in the market for a boat they buy a project and we get help them get a good deal on parts from our advertisers and maybe a few helping hands here and there so the project is covered and it they get a deal and some help for there trouble. Obviuosly we have some great photographers on this site and I'm sure we could work a deal on some photos for some free publicity. The publishing part is probably the easiest. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to layout a page If you have a little graphic design experience you could layout pages. And I know for a fact we have a printer on here who could handle the printing. It obviously is a fact that magazine sales have dwindled since the advent of the internet. But they obviously will never be non existint. (what are you going to bring you laptop to the dentist while waiting). I think a smaller group of people should get together (10-20) with everyone bringing something to the table (not necesarily cash) brainstorm and get a bunch ideas then see plan out a whole years worth of pages then based on the stories start looking for advertisers. I also think the 10 or 20 people should branch out to their people and really get some people involved. Maybe charge them or take a trade (I think someone taking free stuff from advertisers may not be the best idea maybe just sell to us at cost). Get some projects together I know there are some projects out here right now people would love to see get done and everyone would love to feel they area part of it and watch. |

Jim,
That may very well be but what i am saying is the "Who's Who" is somthing that is offered to almost anyone, and that is not one i would site for credibility as it trully means nothing I have done nothing to earn that designation but it is offered to me all the time |
Jim,
I would appreciate it if you would leave this thread alone. I am asking serious questions here and you have your bs. If you want to discuss something I said on another website please go over there and discuss it with me can it be that hard. I will say I am going to be busy for a few days so if you do manage to get on there and get kicked off before I can comment it is not my fault. |
I think it was said here somewhere that magazines are on the way out. I cant say i really believe that. Personally i cant stand E magazines and loose interest real quick. I want a hard copy off a news stand. Besides my Wifi's not to good in the bathroom :D

I do like getting my monthly magazines also, but I think the masses want more. I can make it through a magazine in a little over an hour.
Don't forget another thing, technology, I am reading this post and replying to it from my Droid cell phone. It has wifi runs as fast as my computer and i can access the net from anywhere anytime. I am not restricted to reading what is published in a single mag. I think it would be very hard to start a magazine now, unless like mentioned it was a group effort with the work done pro-bono. I would love to see a speed channel or spike TV show on high performance boats, I think teague would be one who has the clout to make that happen. |

I'd buy the magazine for sure. I agree with GlassDave, I can't stand reading E Magazines. Throughout the day I spend plenty of time on the computer with work, etc, and like actually having a physical magazine in my hand. Just my 0.02
|
You have my subscription! If you look at the "boating on a budget" section you will see how popular that is becoming. I love boating but I am not in the tax bracket to be able to go out and buy a 200k boat. In regards to magazines on there way out it does seem like that is the trend but personally I agree with glassdave. My wifi works fine in the bathroom and catching up on oso from my iPod is nice but the magazine definetly has it's fit!

Great Idea!!
need something that doesn't need electricity to enjoy. Something you can read on a boat, dock or beach, leave out on the coffee table for others or enjoy in the crapper!! |

The current and past magazines don't (didn't) have an issue with getting content. The problem is the advertisers are far and few between these days.
Once the boating business comes back, so will advertisers and so will boating magazines. |
I am glad this made it back to the top. I do understand that current and past magazines did not have issues with content. What I was thinking was more along the lines of the compact car magazine called Project Car (I think this is what it is called I really don't read them just see them on shelves) It shows different upgrades and projects that go on month to month along with other articles about bolt ons etc.
I think the current magazines have their place with racing and Poker runs and New boat tests and I feel there is a need for one that does not fit in these categories. |
I post this on Speed tvs forum in the past. YES we need something. I love cars, but im not a "car guy" Love fast cars but im not a "nascar guy" I love boats im a "BOATER" I would love to see more for me and anyone else like me. A program on speed, a magazine that speeks to those of us who can only dream of 500 k boats. Not that I don't enjoy Powerboat magazine, but thats a playground that I may never be a part of. Follow your dreams!!!!! and don't let someone else tell you that its a bad idea. Where do ya think Bill Gates would be if he listened to the guy who told him it was a bad idea. Walt Disney was bankrupt twice. Appearently he didn't listen to the guy who told him it was a bad idea.
Sorry for the random thoughts. |

Hey db, I like your idea also |
Next thought Anyone have some project boats that could have an article done about them. This idea is kind of on a whim but the more positive response I get the more I want to do it.

In 2003 several of us started Extreme Boat Magazine and as Ron Polli said, content wasn't the issue. We had very simular ideas in what we wanted show and do with the features. Readers rides, reviews from boat owners, projects that the owners were able to do and needed help with.
It was very well recieved and with people like Ron providing content about offshore racing and Bill providing the Unliimited Hydro connection, we had a great thing going. None of us were taking a salary and scraping up everything we had to print each issue figuring the advertising dollars would soon follow...NOT! The advetisers were interested but wanted lots of proof their dollars were getting results. Though we had lots of issues, advertisers and capitalization were the main ones and caused us to seek outside investment earlier than we had planned to. So we lost editorial control and the magazine took on a differant slant, but one we still thought did well, it just wasn't along the lines we planned. Knowing the boating manufactures and accessory suppliers were a very limited market for advertising income, we started there but also went after hotels, real estate and other advertising. Each issue cost $15,000 to $20,000 to print and ship and the 25 dollars per year subscriptions just don't cover very much of it. As Casey Kiernan, the new publisher, grew it over the years, advertisers were covering each issue but not much more than that and without them, no matter how good the content, your not going to get a single magazine printed. As we all saw, the economy took out Hot Boat and Extreme Boats along with hundreds of other magazines out there. Chris Davidson of Performance Boats has several things going for him, DEEP POCKETS and a publishing plan that limits the number of print issues a year. Powerboat is doing simular things like cutting back on number of issues. So, I agree a magazine with the type of content you mention is needed, good luck in getting it together. Make sure you can publish for a year without much income and line up some great photograhy and writers. You might just be in time for the next economic wave to carry you along!! |
