Captain Phil Harris -- star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" -- died about an hour ago ... sources tell TMZ.

Harris was hospitalized a few weeks ago after suffering a stroke while unloading crabs. He had been doing better until the sudden turn.

Captain Harris died in a hospital in Alaska. He was 53.

Harris' kids, Jake and Josh, tell TMZ, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad, Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers."

Really sad news...

However, smoking, moderately overweight with general bad health practices = that result. :(

AugiePensa 02-10-2010 09:22 AM

God Bless.

Bobthebuilder 02-10-2010 09:52 AM

So sorry to hear this. 53 is way too young. Sincere condolences to friends and family.

Really sad

I thought he was in his 60's , smoking really ages you and every time I viewed him I knew it would not be long for him . The really sad thing is that he didn't change his ways for the ones he loved , now they suffer . RIP

Yeah, add alcohol or anthing else to the list. Whatever strikes your fancy! :party-smiley-004:

the dude looked really weathered for only 50 something years old. :(

Funny story, I was selling a roll top desk last week... Someone called who was interested in the desk... Her smoker voice was so raspy that I couldn't tell if it was a man or woman.... I told my wife that "Pat" just called about the desk... When she showed up to pick up the desk I was shocked because she was in her mid 40's....

R.I.P.

I love that program and Phil along with Sig were my two favorite captains. Phil lived hard and was lucky he did not die earlier.

RIP Capt Harris,

My Farther had a stroke at the same age, and was lucky to pull through, this brings back a lot of memories...

You can bet he packed a lot of life into those 50 years.

My favorite skipper too.

To be honest while viewing the show I was sure his heart would explode during taping , he was a real mess , too bad for his family , they are the only ones who suffer

RIP

It's too bad, I liked him. Seemed like he was a good dad.
