I don't think you would want to use a sand strainer in conjunction with a regular strainer on a big engine as the water would probably be restricted to much for the engines pump inlet requirement. Check with the guys at Hardin or with Paul at Pffaff, they should no that answer.

The sand strainer is more for intercoolers than for the engine. I have used them several times on intercoolers and they work great for that. I would stick to a standard strainer for the engine.
