Congrats Guys!! Good to see those jewels in production. I know Gino will be pleased. After adding an extra 150 horses to the engine package last year the trannies didn't care, I'll add another
100 this year and let the beating continue. They will take it and ask for more.

Can your foot handle it?

Mbam 03-01-2010 04:02 PM

I have to say that is a very nice piece. Congrats, I know it was not easy.

kvschoolboard 03-01-2010 04:28 PM

I would think these new Tranny's will get more competetive and will eventually be the tranny of choice. the old style tranny's were ok in their day, but with bigger power/torque these were needed, congrats

Thank You!!! We will get a few more in the field for extreme abuse and see how they hold up. I was pleasantly impressed that they held up in Freedom US1. We have some in a turbine and we will have some test results shorty. I will keep you up to date.

I think PBAM22 needs a set of these for his new power..He said he wants to rip up on some red Skater this year..Don't know who he's talkin about...but he looked determined..He said that guys all smoke and mirrors with them You-Tube videos...I'll show him..:party-smiley-004::kiss:

I've seen AJ determined and it had nothing to do with boating:evilb:

Going to take a little work to catch the red boat but I'm sure somebody will before 2010 is over. Its all part of the game!!:drink:

the transmissions are Speed shift marine transmissions... it is me and Jim Lee's company...

They are not a normal marine transmission with an extra clutch or two,,,, and they are not a 1970's power glide with an adapter to make it bolt up to a marine bell housing...

these transmissions have been in the works since 2003 when I had two speed powerglides in my boat and kept breaking them.. I bought the best transmission parts money could buy (tci stright cut 12 dp Planetaries ,,,10 clutch pack,, ect..) and even with all the goodies they still broke every time I took it out.. so after several tries with them and bams I just went direct drive with the u-joint hooked directly to the crankshaft.... and you guys thought crash boxes were bad... try no neutral and no reverse... anyway.... I decided then that I wanted to build a two speed transmission for my boat so it would be usable again... and now six years later we finally have them available for purchase... there were a few years of how to fit what we wanted in the same package size as a bam so they would be a direct replacement. then we built some and put them in Jim's 46 skater a year ago.. we have made some changes to the valve bodies.... the first ones we built were fully electronic shifted with a toggle switch .... and then we built a manual shift for it... so the ones that are in jims and gino's are manual shift with your shifters from first, neutral, and reverse just like a bam, and then when you want to go to second there is a toggle switch that switches both of them at the same time..
we have tested these extensively in the 46 skater in rough seas leaving the throttle on the dash trying to break them, and so far have never broke any parts in them, there are some changes to oil passage ways and cooling passages to keep the temp down but the same internal parts are still the same ones we originally built them with...

as far as horespower rating for them.... we have ran them on our dyno with an 1800 hp engine and they did not slip... the internal parts should handle 2500 hp... but I will not be able to test that hp for a couple more months till we get my new engines done.... the good thing about every single part being made in-house is that if we do put bigger power to it and have a problem we will just make it stronger..

we have made all the different input shafts... the standard bam small spline,,,, the short crash box big spline,,,, the long crash box smaller spline...

technical specs...

first gear 1.5 to 1 good for docking and getting on plane without putting alot of low rpm load on the engine, keeps engine from dying when you are going in and out of gear...
and perfect for turbo engines that would have trouble being over proped and not being able to get on plane...

second gear is 1 to 1 when its in high gear all the internals are spinning the same direction... it basically locks the input shaft to the output shaft,, the only thing drawing power is the oil pump to put pressure on the clutch pack... so there is so little horsepower draw that we could not measure it at 6000 rpm. I would assume less then 5 hp...

reverse is 2 to 1 which is good to not have the engine die when it goes in and out of gear but props do not work well spinning backwards because they were not designed to work that way, and the prop wash hitting the back of the boat... but they work fine and if you need to backup faster you may need to rev the engine alittle.. a crash box has the same problem of being lower geared in reverse...

Length: 12"
width: 12"
height:13"
weight: 110 lbs
$12,000 each

available as electric shift or manual shift..

We are running our transmissions in a turbine boat this weekend. We will let you know how it works out after the test runs.

I made the poly covers and put them on some aluminum valve covers made by the sorcerer guys. I could probably build some more.

I am assuming the calipers were left on there for the purpose of the
SCS bolt pattern?

There would be no reason to stop the output of the turbine
to shift.

Do I see 6 transom plates? Those must be 13b Turbines if they were
703,s the sixes would be blown clean off the boat:eek:

Regardless Nice Job.

Can the 1-1 gearing be reduced to lets say .80 to 1?

BigSilverCat 03-08-2010 09:37 AM

I don't know how the number 6's live except that it has really smooth power delivery.. I know it has alot of power because that big heavy 50 nortech felt like it would out accelerate the 42 gtx Outerlimits that we installed 1550 sterlings in... Then again he probably has never been as hard on it as he was trying to break my transmission...

Quinlan 03-08-2010 12:59 PM

Good job Tyson.

Bumping an old thread to find out how well these have held up. still have them in your boat, Jim? How many other sets are out and running?

Great transmissions!!! First place in the Bimini and back race in 2010 and they survived!! Plus I usually run Freedom US1 46 Skater hard anyway. Only 12 sets or so were built. They worked great for me.

BigSilverCat 10-08-2015 08:05 AM

The transmissions have worked good, the ones in jims are still serial number 1 and 2 and besides when his number six drive breaking while he was full throttle and twisting off the transmission input shaft from that drive locking up all the internals are still the same ones we built them with back in 2007. This spring one of the electric shift solenoids stuck open and tried to run first and second at the same time and burned the high gear clutches while we were going 40 mph through a channel in the keys, we just put it in first gear and drove the rest of the way home. It was like having a back up trans in the boat.

We just have not had the time to build any more but I have designed a new transmission for my new boat that you can run full power and full time in forward and reverse, so you could switch between spinning in or out just by flipping a switch.
They will be rated to handle 5000 hp.
(I will need them to handle over 3000 ftlbs) I will put some pics of it on here in a few weeks.

999JAY 10-08-2015 02:26 PM

Are they going to be for your diesel application?

Will this work in a turbine app instead of a crash box after the gear reduction?

999JAY 10-08-2015 03:27 PM

Just a thought how is counter rotation take care of if using and Arneson straight?

BigSilverCat 10-08-2015 06:41 PM

I am using straight arneson on my boat. I was going to build a drop box and have different amounts of gears in them to get one counter rotating. For doing endurance runs and having spare parts it would be more spares I would need of everything. And if we broke a couple props and had spares but they were the wrong direction we would be stopped. By being able to run the transmission output clockwise or counter clockwise full time I can basically put one in forward and one in reverse and that solves the straight arneson problem and if we have two of the same prop I can run both clockwise and keep going. An added benefit will be that if we run 1200 miles we may have totally different sea conditions and weight at different parts of the run and we will be able to swap the props from side to side in the water and spin in or out to make the boat faster and more efficient for the conditions.

yes you could use these on a turbine.
yes they are for the diesels.

999JAY 10-09-2015 01:23 PM

Wish I had spotted these earlier, I have just bought a pair of overdrive ZF 305s for my project single speed and very heavy but these were the only boxes I could find that would handle 1500 lbs of torque at 3100 rpm.
Well if they don't work I know who to contact as you boxes sound the perfect solution to diesel applications.

KAOSS 12-02-2015 03:08 PM

Id love a set damn . I still havent broke a 71 c haha
