An older 20ft Sutphen.

wjb21ndtown 03-19-2010 08:07 PM

What kind of water is he planning on running it in? The Donzi classics are cool boats. Checkmate has some smaller models that look and run pretty well in calmer water too.

Why is he adverse to a 20-24' boat?

If he would go up to 21' the older (late 80's) 21' Liberators are pretty sweet boats for the cost. They ride well in rougher seas and move pretty good (but most of them have a BBF 460 in them)...

it's free

mikes280 03-19-2010 08:39 PM

it is a 93 22 ft donzi may be the best deal on one i have seen and the boat runs well

mikesufka 03-19-2010 08:42 PM

If he would consider an outboard:

1) Allison
2) STV

Both are 100+ MPH boats with a good Merc on the back.

Yea he'll do an OB. He's looking to do lakes and just really small water just to get the feel of a boat, speeds and so on. But doesnt want to go to big so 20 maybe 21 but only looking to spent 4-5K

Sick Stinger 03-19-2010 08:49 PM

Mike i showed him that Donzi when it cam on but way to much coin for him.

4-5K?

Might find an old Hydrostream for that amount.... That's not much of a budget though.

Mike

Sick Stinger 03-19-2010 09:13 PM

True its not but i bought a 222 stinger for 6.5K with a fresh 454 2 years ago so i was guessing 4-5 would be ok. I mean he can fix anything it needs, paint, refresh engine, and so on.

The old hydrostream is the answer...or a small Scarab jetboat...or put all the money into the motor and mount it on an aluminum jetboat. A small Boston Whaler jetboat can be bought for that and not lose money when you sell...but it's not fast....$4-5K doesn't really buy fast and reliable too often.

This would be my pick. Donzi 18 Classics have a great ride and are beautiful boats. In my opinion, of all the other boats, this would probably be worth the most after a resto.

Coolest boat of all the suggestions too!

Mike a year and a half ago I bought a 1991 Donzi sweet 16 in mint condition for $ 6,000 , it runs 45 mph and handles 2 footers like a 20 foot boat . Best deal on a boat I ever made . Great for skiing the kids ,tubing and just going for a blast and it looks cool, a 16 foot veresion of an offshore boat.

I have an 87 Checkmate with 210hp 4.3 with alpha, runs 55 all day long on gps and is a blast to drive.I believe its 17.5' in awesome shape. It could be had for 3500.00

tommymonza 03-21-2010 10:58 AM

A 18 foot Powerplay/Powerquest is a big little boat that can handle some rough stuff. They mostly came with 260s and will run 60 with it. Well built and Michigan has a ton of them that i am sure you could pick one up in decent condition for that price.

rmfriday 03-21-2010 11:12 AM

i sold a baja 196sport last summer for $4800, it had a 454 alpha setup and would run 67gps on a good day. not to many around but it was a good boat to me.
