Speaker recommendations

I'm looking for some good quality 6x9 marine speakers for some cut-outs in a rear seat base. This doesn't seem to be that popular of a size anymore. I was also wondering if the component speakers, such as JL 7.7 are that much better than their coaxial 7.7? I just don't want more holes than are needed. Opinions? Thanks, Steve

Polks are the way to go. They are marine rated and sound great. One of my requirements for marine speaker is no mesh for grills. Polks always have molded plastic grills which look great and will never pop out.

chattviper 04-09-2010 07:37 AM

Polks for sure!!! They have crossovers built in too!! http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/db...s=db6501#db691
I painted my plastic grills to match trim on boat.
They are by far the best 6X9's out there IMO

Do a search for JL on here... I just had a good size install done and it sounds killer.

apppedigree 04-09-2010 10:14 AM

JL all the way.

You can go with the seperates or with the all in one 7.7.

I have 6 of the seperates in my boat with 2 12's in ported boxes up under the dash.

It rocks.

JL's are really nice, but if you just want to use the existing 6x9 cutouts, the new Polk MM's are the way to go. http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/mm/index.php?s=mm691
My cafe had a 6x9 & a 6.5" mounted at ankle level under the bolsters. A great spot for speakers. :lolhit: I ended up replacing them w/ Polks. I then want to add additional speakers higher up in the gunwale. Trying to decide if i just wanna stay w/ the Polk 651UM's or use JL's up there.

DC Gold. They don't have the name recognition of the other brands but are incredible speakers. Rated at 80watts rms and 300 peak, but I would say that is conservative. I'm putting over 100rms to mine. 100% waterproof and a 3 year warranty.

i copied the wrong link...your right...MM's is what I meant.
I have 12 of these in my pontoon boat. LOL:evilb:

I don't think JL offers a 6x9 size, otherwise I'ld be very interested. I've heard a lot of good comments about them! Steve

Griff, I know that DC Gold is the old Babb and they have a good reputation but the grills are a little dated in styling. I don't want to go with billet grills, any other aftermarket grills available that would fit? So far the Polk MM's seem to be my best choice, any others worth looking at? Thanks, Steve

OL40SVX 04-09-2010 07:51 PM

Focals..........they sound absolutly amazing!!

Sydwayz 04-09-2010 07:55 PM

The more round the speaker, the better the sound. You want 6.5s or 7.7s.

Brian, I have 6x9 cut outs under the rear seat base, I don't think Pat wants to glass them up to accommodate round speakers, read the post before you reply :grinser010:! Steve Lol This is my fault for not planning on a better stereo 5 months ago.

Sydwayz 04-10-2010 12:25 AM

LOL, I didn't know they were cut already. My bad.

I agree, they could use some more options to modernize the look. They can be ordered without grills, but I'm not sure what else could be used other than some billet stuff and that will get pricey and may be hard to match later. I think the speakers that I took out were the original Infinity's and the DCG's are about 1/4" smaller all the way around.

I really don't mind the look in my boat, but my cockpit is almost all white. They are kind of like having that sleeper car that blows everything else away. I definately see your point about the look in a brand new boat. I really don't know any other direction to steer you on a great sounding 6x9.

Wet-N-Wild 04-10-2010 02:05 AM

I say go with the Polk audio's also. I have 8 of them on my boat and it rocks!!! They are great speakers for the price. They have clear highs and deep base. I'm really happy with mine. Good luck!!

I have Polks at home, boat and truck. Excellent speakers with excellent warranty. I decided on components in the boat with a 12" sub.

Jeff, How many speakers are you running in the Sonic and what kind of amp, I see the Polk are 2 ohm, does that mean more volume with less power? Steve

hp500efi 04-10-2010 10:43 AM

Steve,

I am running (4) Polk 6.5" MM components in the cockpit with a portable Alumapro 12" ported sub. I like the idea of a portable sub so that I can move it around. I disconnected the cabin speakers for now otherwise they would have been way over-powered.

I have a JL audio 500/1 powering the sub and (2) 500W Polk amps powering the speakers. I wanted the speaker amps to run cooler since they are located in the cabin (1 amp -2 speakers) so I bridged them (plus I found a good deal on the amps).

Had an issue with the original Clarion head unit and replaced that with a new Kenwood with Ipod capability. She cranks if you want it to ;) :)

Lots of wiring, big fuses etc. but all well worth it.

dookie 04-10-2010 11:30 AM

How are the Polk Amps ? I am about to purchase a JL , but only because i have heard so much good about the speakers , and the fact that they have a 6 channel that is pretty reasonable?

dookie 04-10-2010 11:33 AM

Also has anyone place a speakerbox in their cabin? I have often wondered why you dont see more of this . I understand the concept of having the mids and highs outside for the clarity , but would think the bass coming from the cabin would do well ,especially since it is bouncing off all the walls. I have a 12" Kicker solabaric in a decent box ,that i can cover in white, and think it would do great with big power . .. . Thoughts???

FuelinAround 04-10-2010 02:04 PM

Here is the link of my install I told you about http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...ound-pics.html The total install...cutting holes, speakers, wire, amps, everything was $2500 and it screams. The water is absolutely worthless without a killer stereo (unless your a gay guy and don;t like to have girls dancing on your boat) so make sure and not short cut it! As far as sound in the cuddy goes. I think most people just have to much junk to feel there cuddy and you want to be able to feel the bass in your seat while you are riding.

Thats what I had in the NT..Loved them...Nice tight deep base, good mids, and highs were perfect not screaching when cranked up. I even had a set made for when rafting up. I also added a remote by the swim platform.

JL does make a 6x9, just not in a marine version

The amps I have ... have been flawless. Plenty of clean power. I would buy Polk's again.

My portable sub in the cabin is nice...quite boom'y if you sit in there but when it is time to let er rip, we bring the speaker box out in the open...amazing how the boom is when you place the speaker where you want it. I also like the idea of being able to completely remove the speaker from the boat.

dookie 04-11-2010 12:57 PM

COol , i think that i am going to cover the box with some white vinyl , and put some big power behind it. The box is just big and cumbersome , and wont really want to move it much. I am just not ready to give up my under seat storage .
But..... how do the subs do under your seats.??? Are you building sealed enclosures under there?

509 SC 04-12-2010 10:13 PM

Just wanted to thank everybody with their speaker knowledge! Ended up going with the Polk MM series. Steve
