Killer motors BTW.

skater did not get the boat done till the week of the shootout so we went to loto and tried dialing it in but there was not enough time to finish it before the run so we decided not to try to go fast in a brand new boat with no seat time..

we have been running it around grand the the last couple weeks... here is a video of us running down the lake a couple days ago...

this was not trying to make a high speed video... just a video of us running around so we would have record of rpm and speed at different points so we could figure our prop slip trying different set ups.

youtube compresses the video so it is hard to read the numbers on there but on my computer we can read them.. I will try to upload to vimeo and see if its better there..

in the video at 55-5600 rpm and 3 lbs boost we are running 160 mph.. with a 40 pitch prop and 1.15 gear ratio in the #6..

Looks and sounds awesome. I can't wait to see it turned up to full boost!!!
Great work as always SMITH POWER!

Tyson, what's the deal with the smaller exhaust pipes on the back of the boat that are above the bigger ones?

fantastixvoyage 09-16-2010 12:35 PM

Noticed the michigan plates, its that just a "borrowed trailer/plate" or is the boat staying in Michigan?

Very cool ride, always neat to see something innovative. It was only a matter of time as turbos have come a LONG way and add in modern EFI and you've got quite a setup. Great job.

Those are wastegate exhausts. The wastegates control the boost pressure by bypassing any extra exhaust gasses not needed to achieve the desired airflow (boost) from the turbos. In some applications (Merc 1300/1350's for example), the wastegate exhaust can be shared with the primary exhaust downstream of the turbo, but that can sometimes create boost control issues.

yep... what he said...
we were going to have the wastegate pipes go right into the main exhaust right behind the turbo like we did when we made them for the dyno but cmi said they could not do that.... when we get time this winter we are going to remake them ourselves so there will only be two main exhaust pipes so it will look better in the engine compartment..

Boat will stay in Oklahoma. The boat and and the mills are even more beautiful in person. I can't wait for a ride.:drink:

Very impressive.

Out of curiosity, why weren't the injectors placed in the individual runners at the base in the of the intake? I would think this would promote better fuel distribution.

Back4More 09-16-2010 04:15 PM

Flame arrestors? Air filters?

Maybe they are??

We did not want to put them on the outside where the injectors and fuel rail and wiring would clutter up the engine.. We wanted to keep it as clean and organized looking as possible.

The injectors are inside firing into the intake runners

These engines were built for looks and we think the turbos look cool so we did not want to put anything infront of them so we put the air filters in the tubing going to the intercooler, and you do not need a flame arrestor when there is an intercooler and 30 feet of pipe and a turbo that the flame would have to make it through..... The 30 feet was a joke, For the people that say our plumbing is too long and won't work.

LV 09-16-2010 05:29 PM

Nice job Brad and Tyson, and sorry Merc!

E Dock DD 09-16-2010 06:15 PM

Looks like the prop slip is a little higher than you want. I am curious, did you see more prop slip at 160 mph versus a speed like around 120 mph?

dkwestern 09-16-2010 06:28 PM

Props In or Out? Looking at the vid the tails are shooting to the middle, in my head spinng out would throw water up towards the middle, but just curious.

Enough 4 Play 09-16-2010 06:31 PM

Absolutely awesome package. I saw it at the dockas at Dog Days at the shootout. Just an observation in the video the water pressure seems to be around 45 to 50 lbs when runnig at 5500 rpm. Is that too much water pressure.

JasonSmith 09-16-2010 06:35 PM

Another observation.......that thing is f*cking KOOL!

Yep..
We changed props and it made the boat handle different and the water pressure go real high.
After watching the video were lucky we have not blown the gaskets yet or the water pump. Or broke the needle off the gauge when it swings around and bottoms out

Funny...I was thinking the same thing. I just don't understand why people use Merc drives on high hp/torque motors.

Never seen so many pulleys on one motor. I count ten?

Amazing job guys. Lot of work going into those mills!

Those pulleys drive our hidden superchargers... The turbos are just there for looks.... Turbos don't really work in boats...

Young Performance 09-16-2010 10:48 PM

Hey Tyson, just a thought.....I noticed in the vid that the water pressure was spiking on the inside engine in a turn. I like to run a 1 1/4" hose from the port to the starboard strainer to stop the pressure spikes. It really works well and stops all the needle jumping and high pressure spikes not only when turning, but if one pickup hits the water and the other is out of the water. Looks great. Very nice work.
Eddie

it's about time you admitted that!! lol, j/k Tyson, the boat looked great at loto. I wish you guys the best on getting that beast dialed in.

if you look at the video where its just the engine starting you see a hose on the back wall with a valve that is open? that one connects the two strainers together.... that is one of the things we are going to replace with a bigger one this winter then what skater put in for us... and we are going to put in a bigger blow off pressure valve.

Eddie

We ran into water pressure issues going above 110 mph and beyond on Drambuie last spring.

We did exactly what Eddie mentioned connecting both strainers and taped 4 water dumps with 10# waste gates to it going directly outside and have not run into water pressure issues since.

We also use braided lines from the pickups to the strainers as the pressures there are still up at higher speeds this being before the waste-gates... (also cause we burst some hoses last year a couple times!)

Audiofn 09-21-2010 11:00 AM

GL couldn't you put a dump before the strainer as well to keep that area's water preasure down?

Space is restricted from pick up to the strainers and the strainers can take the 40-60# the upper speed generate. I would not risk engines and chillers with those pressures for any length of time in my very humble opinion.
