Technical Question
 

I know that an engine block can crack from freezing. Very common type of damage from freezing without winterizing.

But can an engine block crack from overheating?
And If so, is it common for a the block to crack from excessive heat, or does it happen just sometimes (while other massive damage happens)?

And if an engine block can crack from overheating, what other damage might I look for if I suspect an overheating incident?

Dave...you have some head problems if it gets too hot. They can twist/warp and have to be ground flat if the damage is not too severe. This can't be for your new 496, can it :confused: Steve

I heated a cast iron cylinder head up to 400 degrees in the oven to get some wedges out. I had a big hole in one of the intake ports I wanted to get welded. The wedges were epoxied in, so I heated it to burn out the epoxy. Well when I pulled it out of the oven it must have cracked when it hit the cold air. I got to the welders and he said the thing was all cracked.. So the head was junk.. Point being that heat and cold to quick could crack it. I know that when they are welded they heat it up pretty hot.. so I figured I was ok.. but I wasnt.
Don't know it that helps, but if you got it that hot, I would suspect damage to the bores and bearings and the works.. Pull it out and tear it down.. then read what the parts are telling..

No, Steve, definitely not the new 496. It's running fine.

It's an issue with my old boat.
