Hi,
This is the boat I "terrorized" with in 1981...Reggie's 1st boat...Kevlar hull with Merc 454's, twin turbocharged/Gale Banks set-up with Speedie II's...ran 86 MPH!
As I am "setting up" for the DON ARONOW MEMORIAL MARATHON RACE AROUND LONG ISLAND... this is the run.
On Sept 18th, 2010:
We are starting at LaMotta's Restaurant/Manhasset Bay Marina in Port Washington, NY, heading North and going around Orient Pt Litehouse, then around Montauk Pt Litehouse, south around the Rockaways, up the Hudson River, up the East River and back to LaMotta's Restaurant.

Distance: 271 miles total. You can stop for fuel where ever you want.
Stu Hayim in his 32 Skater, "RECOVERY" set the record for this course at 3 hours and 6 minutes in 1989 with Joey Impresscia on the throttles.

1968: Bill Sirois 31'Bertram SIDEWINDER 2-475 HP MerCruisers 3 hrs & 59 min
avg: 63.5 mph 253 miles
1969:Peter Rittmaster 31'Bertram AMERICAN MOPPIE 2-475HP MerCs 4 HRS& 33 min
avg: 48.9 mph 222.5 miles
...and then the event moved to Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1970.
I am not sure why the distances around Long Island change/are different some years.

Distance changed because the start line was moved to The lower Harbor in 1966 or so with the finish line at Flushing Bay...so the course was shortened to eliminate the East River and Hells Gate.

The original race started and ended at Jones Inlet and featured a full lap around Long Island. There also may have been some confusion around Statute miles and Nautical miles.

Comparing Sirois time with Hayim's give's you some idea how tough this course can be....and how damn good Bill Sirois really was given the hardware he had to work with.

Billy....... I was just thinking......don't know how hard it would be to do but it would be cool for each boat in the race to have a "Spot" on there boat so they can be tracked throughout the race...... this would also be helpful for us who plan on being safety boats.......

Some of types of race boats used in this race.

What we need to see this year, is the comeback of some outboard racers like the old Kiekhaefer teams of old.

Somewhere out there is an old hull and deck.....a couple of guys could put the funds together to pick it up and talk some dealer into a promotion deal for 3 new fuel efficient outboards.......put some big tanks in.... and you have a non-stop ocean racer.

It may not be the fastest, BUT...you won't be stopping for fuel either.

This could be our sleeper.....winner comes riding in on 20 year old boat.

There has to be an old hull and deck that is still seaworthy, but has been stripped of the engines and drives etc. A couple of guys could partner up......fill in the transom and put on a bracket with some new fuel efficient outboards and big tanks and have a real offshore old school race boat.

Three outboards on a 35 footer would be very nice especially if you didn't have to stop for fuel. How much fuel would you need to cary to run 3 or 4 hours?

september around long island can be pretty unpredicatble as it is hurricane seasone... better bring a big boat...

i would do that one in the Tiger, not the 20 lol... bigger water might give me a chance because I top out in high 70's
