NEW YORK — An eight-story building has partially collapsed in New York City, and more than 20 people have been injured.
The collapse occurred at the building that houses the Apex Technical School, in the Chelsea neighborhood of downtown Manhattan.
The school offers training in such fields as welding, automotive repair, refrigeration, air conditioning, and appliance technology.
More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene. Fire officials said it appeared some type of explosion collapsed some floors of the building.
They said 21 people were being treated at the scene for injuries.

Checked with CNN and they reprted that there were plumbers working on a boiler in the schools basement. They think that may have someting to do with it. No fire or smoke, just blown out windows. They didn't say anything about structural damage.

it was at APEX technical school. ANyone in NY knows who they are from eth awful commercials they ran for the past 20 years "we can't call you, so you should call us" or somethign like that. It's a trade school.
I would think boiler expslosion is alot less likely than a welding student forgeting to turn off the accetaline.

puder,
You ever see an acetylene expolsion?
When I was in welding school, back in '76, a construction worker was transporting two acetylene tanks in the back of a station wagon, lying down.
Somehow they began to leak. The driver stopped for a cup of coffee. He returned to the car, jumped in, turned the key and BOOM!!!. The explosion not only blew up the car but took out the coffee shop too.
Right after that I had a tank start leaking past the threads where the valve screws into the tank. It started burning from a near by spark. All I did to stop it was to blow it out.
