Unlike your constant bragging, all I've ever done is relate experiences and help people as best I could with whatever knowledge I had. The amazing thing is you challenged me on some pretty piddling boats. I've has several Sutphens- little boats, all over a decade old. Your imagination had me owning a fleet of 39's. I owned a Maritime. It wasn't thunderbird- it was one of their 20's. Another thousand-dollar boat. A 27 IMP knockoff Squadron. ?? And when I did talk about it, it was talking about relating a childhood experience, not winning the 63 Griffith trophy. Nowher ever do you see me bragging about anything. Everyone that knows me knows I live an average middle-class life, that I live in a modest home and don't do anything extravagantly. So I've bought and traded boats for alot of years- so what? I was fortunate enough to work my way into some nice boats. Then I sold them and tried different stuff- and made some bucks doing it. In fact, I joked all the time about my fleet of disassembled junk- Quite the braggart, huh? I could never afford to own two at the same time. All this was posted in those same threads. You have it worked up in your mind that I was telling people I had Al Copeland's garage behind my house.

Rob, you're just an angry, bitter guy. You tried to get into the inside at Serious and you couldn't. Then you tried your bully act, first by perstering the mods to death, then going after members. When we clipped your wings, you ran over here and went into full vendetta mode.

My first adult occupation was finding pilots and crew that were down in forests, mountains and oceans and bringing them back, sometimes while people were shooting at me. (as well as the occasional stupid civilian) I had to give it up after getting knocked out of a helo and spending most of a year in a hospital. I've started five successful businesses from scratch, each time risking everything I owned. I've raced (and crashed) raceboats, racebikes and racecars. All more than once. These days, for fun, I teach cops how to stay alive in CQB when they're out-numbered or overpowered. Overall, I've been hurt more times than most humans have had paper cuts.
Not only am I incredibly well-familiar with risk, I've seen way more than my share.
There's a big difference between risk and "Hey! Watch this!" The former is a well-evaluated plan of action that considers all the variables in an analytical process. The latter is action with little if any consideration for the potential outcome, usually brought about by the thought of the pleasure the action will yield while discounting or ignoring the potential downside. Both are dangerous, the latter is unncessarily so.
Believe me, I've certainly done my share of things that could easily have been categorized as "Hey! Watch this!" Maybe that's how I can tell the difference between the smart one's and the dumb one's.

I've beaten the hell out of a few sets of TRS drives over the years and NEVER had problems- even nearing 600HP. They got new oil every 20 hrs and looked at/re-shimmed every 100. The old 3's on my apache never caused a problem either.

I owned an [Velocity] '80 from '84 to '89. It was Jay Smith's old raceboat Putt Putt. When I bought it it had side-by-side 355" small blocks @ about 350 HP each. Replaced those with 450HP small blocks, then 550Hp 468's the Banks TT 496's. Out of all of them, I preferred the hi-powered small blocks......I replaced the boat [Velocity] with a Cig 35 and was really disappointed. The Cig was slow, lazy and although it rode good, it didn't do anything the Velocity couldn't (other than carry 8 people and have a cabin). I replaced the Cig with an Apache 41. I only wish that I could have afforded the $$$$$ of running that beast but with two babies it wasn't practical.

Boat names- last one a 41 Apache named Moses. Currently restoring a Squadron XII- no name yet. Yeah, I had to explain the Moses thing quite a bit.

Try boating on Lake Erie with a documented vessel. I was strongly warned twice then had my Apache impounded for being unregistered. The Division of Watercraft then turned me in to the Ohio Department of Taxation who fined me for avoiding sales tax. Avoiding state taxes is illegal and I can assure you the local authorities in the western basin either aren't trained or don't care about USCG documentation.

Picked up 2 mph using this on my Apache. Very expensive but permanent- I ended up doing the sides and deck as well- made it alot easier to wash.

After almost killing myself using a small truck to pull a big boat, I bought a Freightliner FL70. Can't even feel the Apache back there. I haven't even bothered to hook up the electric brakes on the trailer. A used one cost me half of what my Excursion did. Just wish it had a crew cab.

42" '86 pleasure with full cabin. My Excursion diesel pulls it but it's more like the boat pushes the truck sometimes. It's OK around town but not great on the highway. Last fall on I-76, some A/H went across the median and into oncoming traffic on a big curve- I saw him in time and made a quick cut inside of him. I went halfway into the median at about 65 or so. He went on my right side and hit the car I was passing. I whipped right up on the road and got stopped- all while pulling the Apache.

I don't know which lake you're on but moving from a [Top] Gun to an Apache allowed me to go out on some days on Erie I'd have otherwise passed on. Big step from the 35 to the 38. Plus, you can get equivalent 38's for not a bunch more and they hold their value better. Downsides- if you rack store, not everyone can take a 38; same power between the 35 & 38 equals a 5 to 7 mph loss- maybe more, depending on the year- older Guns are somewhat heavier than the new ones. If you tow, you're probably going to need a bigger truck- an F250 ain't gonna' cut it for anything other than around the neighborhood.

Had an all-white glass 46- [Cougar] bought it out of northern MI. Had OMC's on it- no motors. Put 3 540's with #3's in it. All my pics are film (was late going digital).
Don't get me wrong, the Cougar was a wave crusher. It was just really heavy and always felt stuck in the water. I was going to strip the cabin to see what that would do but I came across another 41 and decided to "go back home".

That's what I had [38 Flat Deck Cig] prior to my 1st 41. They take more power to go the same speed- probably 150 or so per engine. In anything beyond 3', they're 5 to 15 MPH faster with the same ride, I.E. if the Cig can run comfortably at 45 in 4' waves, the Apache can run 55 to 60. Very similar bottom- the Apache just has more mass and the additional length.

Mine [46 Cougar] had 3 850's and would nudge 80 with light fuel and a slight chop. Poor choice for a lake boat- excellent choice if the water you boat on gets sloppy. You can run full speed in 4's and 5's and never have to touch the throttles.

The 35 wasn't supposed to be a project. It was supposed to be some new vinyl and some paint touchup. Didn't work out that way. The 24- I just couldn't pass it up. I'm going to do it exactly like the 35- they'll be twins. The Spectra? Just a little cafe racer for the local chain of lakes.

I'd love to- but owning a dis-assembled Apache 41, a now-disassembled Cig 35 and I bought Charlie's Cig 24 yesterday, I'd say I'm far enough over the edge. Besides, would you really want to see Dry Martini reduced to a bare hull and a boxes full of parts?
Looks like I'll be watching the Aronow race from the beach- there's always next year. Hopefully.

As far as Apaches that we've seen for sale, every one of them has taken substantial sums of money to get into shape- and in most cases more than the buyer anticipated. After re-doing 3 and being on my 4th, I'd say I know a little about the topic.

My wife does not like performance boating. So I buried myself in a big Searay. Turns out, she likes boat rides and hotels. I could have stayed in 4 star hotels for the rest of my life for the depreciation on the Searay. I took the big hit and dumped it.

My old 45 Cary weighed 19K and my 46 Searay weighs just under 25K with 3/4 load of fuel and all the "stuff" on board. That should give you some relative benchmarks on boat weight.

I've watched planes hit birds and fall from the sky- USAF.
Watched a T-38 on takeoff roll suck in a gull. Dropped like a rock. Since they were about to run out of runway, they tried to punch out- unsuccesfully. I was less than 1/2 mile away.
Turbines are wonderful devices but certainly not bulletproof or hassle-free.
