It has been a long time but, I dont remember them ever building a 211 with a 454....Also..I think that 454/Alpha was only in 1987. With some 88s floating around...
Maybe someone put that BB in her ?

Sounds like a cool package...I always liked 211s

87 211

I have a 87 211 liberator. It has a 454 with bravo 1 original.
Burgundy and gray colors. Waxed every yr and stored indoors
still in good condition even get 2-3 compliments a yr on it.
Right now I'm having the motor rebuilt for increased HP.
Orginal setup pushed boat 54-55 mph. I called Four Winns
some yrs ago to ask if boat could handle the increased HP.
They replied that there are some liberators that were
built at the factory with some unique setups. such as twin motors
on bigger lib's or like mine I guess. I'm the 3rd owner.
I've owned 15yrs bought in 95.
The 2nd owner said that the 1st owner had it built this
way with the idea of building up the motor. But never did it
Anyway Always nice to hear about fellow liberator owners.

I remember one like that with a small block and was called something like, 2+2.

A true 454 Magnum is 365 HP. They never put that in front of an Alpha drive. (Thank god!) I'd be real careful with that engine / drive combination on hard starts and in rough water. It's not called "the hand grenade combination" for no reason.

I had an 86 211 I bought new, and there were no 454's available in that boat. You had to go up to a 241 to get the BB, and it was a 330 in front of an Alpha.
Brandobad's boat was modified by a previous owner; it did not come out of the Four Winns factory that way. There were several mfg's in that era that made the mistake of placing an Alpha behind the 454, the Pachanga comes to mind......

The 86 211 is a classic-styled offshore- teak deck, squared-off windshield and Bomar etc. The hull has its limitations- IMHO, it's best served with a stout stroked SBC with an Alpha SS behind it.

Absolutley correct on the 330 HP version of the 454 being the only BB available from the factory in front of a poor, hapless Alpha drive. I can't tell you how many I've seen blown up. Even Mercury High Performance Gear Lube tends to look like Never Sieze in pretty short order.

Believe it or not, a guy who lives not far from me has an '87 Pachanga with the 454 / 330 Alpha setup - and it's never been apart. The guy babies the hell out of it though.

Buddy of mine has a nice 211. Had it re-shot in all black.....he keeps the teak looking like new......real pretty boat. It actually has a 305/Alpha combo.

I have heard of a couple of 211 that came with a 454

I've 'heard' lots of things in my all my years as well..... for facts, see my post above.

Howdy,

My brother bought my 87 211 Liberator new in Las Vegas.

He said they gave him a choice of the Merc 454 (330 crank hp) and the OMC 460 (340 crank hp) and he selected the 460 because it was "more" hp  yeah right!

He ran it from 1987-2004 when I bought it. Although it would do about 60 mph once it finally got up on a plane with the 460 King Kobra, it was a real DOG out of the hole even when it was new.

I pulled the OMC junk out and put a 1997 454/Bravo III in and have been running it ever since.

The difference is nothing less than spectacular and although it's about 3 mph less.......it comes out of the hole like a ROCKET.

I have a 87 211 liberator. It has a 454 with bravo 1
I don't think an 87 could have ever come with a Bravo since they weren't offered until something like 88?

Regards,

Rick

1986 211 came with a 260 or 300 hp mercruiser package. I know the 260 package was a 350. Not sure what the 300hp package was but I would have to assume it was a big block.

The 2+2 was a 1990 201 that was balsa cored and came with a 454 and 2+2 seating. There were a few made with 502s.

300 Tempest....Smallblock

HT32BSX115 07-17-2010 08:52 PM

In those days they would have rated the engine/drive using crankshaft HP.

The OMC 460 was rated at 340hp and the 454, 330hp.

My 97 454/Bravo III is rated at 300 Propshaft HP.
