I am new here and wanted to see if someone could help me out I am looking at a 1984 FOUNTAIN 40 foot (12m) Lighting

The boat in spotless and super clean. The onlyt problem is that it is a REPO and the motors were & exhaust removed before they got it back. everything else is there

what would this be worth if i bought it. I just want to be safe incase I buy it and don't every find the write motors for it i don't want to lose money on it.

If it's worth that without motors then what would it be worth with say 2 decent 454's

also it comes with the trailer

Nuke32fever 06-06-2010 02:45 PM

Pretty vague on description. If the exterior was mint and the interior has been updated and was in excellent condition, had updated throttles, gauges etc, newer drives or drives at all, trailer, it could be worth $8k or it could be worth almost $20k.

maybe 25-35 with engines..depends on in what shape..but with #3 drives 454's would not push the boat real good.

U would need to stick some 650 HP engines in it to have fun...old heavy Fountain ..

Are the trannys still there ?? and the wiring with all the pumps and such ??

Trailer is worth ( used ) 4-5 K but boat would never sell with out because of age !

Jupiter Sunsation 06-06-2010 02:49 PM

5K as is on the trailer

running with a pair of 454's the boat won't be real exciting and maybe you could get 20K for it.

Actually I have to agree, the boat is 26 years old?? What will it cost to get it on the water 25K - 35K and then what is it worth?? subtract the hassle of doing it. By the time you factor everything in you could go buy a complete boat that is newer

http://www.boattrader.com/listing/19...Meter-96867855

Newer and ready to go 29K asking ???

Aren't you a bit concerned that if they had the tools out and they took the engines/exhaust there may have been a reason they left the drives on there? That trailer is not worth 5K. It is wrapped with vinyl (interesting) and probably full of rust which is why the vinyl was added (to cover it).

I know of an Apache that was purchased extremely cheap a few weeks back. Boat sat for a long time but it came back to the marina on its own power albeit one of the drives was grenaded. The deal of a lifetime just about doubled in price after the drive was replaced and a few more issues were uncovered.

This boat is not going to break 55 mph with a pair of 454's and even though it appears nice in the pictures you could easily over-improve the value and have a boat no one wants (old, heavy, non step bottom, etc.)

I'll have to agree......probably get this for $25k, could use it a few years and probably get your money back. Boats are cheap cheap right now, even ones that run.

well the motors were out of the boat being rebuilt over the winter. The guy who owned the boat didn't have the money to pay for them when they were done. So the guy the rebuilt them keep them until he came up with the money..

well the repo guy found the boat before he had the money for the motors so that it why the motors were out

I dont think u find a 35 foot boat in running condition with #3's and an aluminum trailer for 25 k ????

The interior looks to be in real good shape and so is the hull ..the old fountains where build solid as a rock as well !

The ask price on that boat is $29,900 and people that have them for sell, want to sell them. I think getting them to $25k shouldn't be too difficult.

POWERPLAY J 06-06-2010 04:03 PM

Where is it located in MI? the background looks familiar

HALLETT FAN 06-06-2010 04:14 PM

Powerquest230 06-06-2010 04:18 PM

Didn't a similar 12meter with a pair of hp500's sell for low 20's at National Liquidators about two months ago? Would be a nice old school ride when put back together but you'll definitely be upside down in it...

oh6662b 06-06-2010 05:08 PM

run get one running

BattleCry 06-06-2010 07:38 PM

A friend in LOTO sold a mid 80's 40 Fountain with blower motors running and complete for $15K. It needed interior, cleaned/buffed, and didn't have a trailer.

I'd be at $10K-15K without looking at it. Engines could easily cost $10K/pair and $2K/pair for trans, plus misc and install. The drives...Good Luck. Parts could be tough to find and you may have to rebuild them.

DD
I have looked all over this thread for mention of #3s or a pic and I'm just not seeing it. It must have been deleted.

But your buddy ....15 K ..wow, thats crazy !!!

Jupiter Sunsation 06-06-2010 09:14 PM

To me when you are buying a project boat like this you have to value it like you could walk away from it when you find a big problem.

To me, I could throw 5K at it and if it looks like the point of no return it becomes a 5K scrap project. Too many unknowns on this age of boat, is the transom/stringers rotted, fuel tank leaking, is the trailer any good, are the drives (no matter what the make) usable. This is a boat you can only do a limited survey on, however if it was a boat that I could drive for 10 minutes then it takes a lot of guessing out of the purchase.

Unless the buyer has a pair of running engines and a killer set of tools (and the knowledge and time to use them) this boat is going to be a loser. Anyone remember the guy Jay that bought a running Apache used it a couple times then stripped it for a restoration/re-rig only never to get the boat wet again or that guy in California that dumped crazy money into that old Scarab/Excalibur only to have a 1/2 finished boat that he has 15-20K into but has NEVER run. This boat is one of those projects!

the picture link to my photobucket got screwed up i will repost the pictures in the morning

Seems like a nit of work and more money than its worth unless you enjoy up and down and up and down fixing and fighting. Its worth 30 as a complete boat. PM me for pics of mine and Ill Give you a test ride with trailer surface drives and fast. :drink:

If you are thinking about this, I will share alittle info, I took on a major project, I am still in the works of getting it on the water. For the the amount of money I currently have into it, I could have purchased a very nice and newer bigger boat. For me, it was different as this is exactly what I want in style of boat, and I am doing everything the way I like it, I am still almost 10k away from being done, and that does not include interior! Just dropping in a set of engines never goes how you think it will in your head!

BattleCry 06-08-2010 03:49 AM

I also look at a purchase like this as to what the boat will part-out for. The reason being, if at some point another deal comes up that I want, I can always get my money back in parts i.e. drives, gimbals, controls, engines, trans, hull, and trailer. There will always be people out there that believe they can buy a cheap hull and rig it themselves to save a bunch of money.

Strange. Its a 1984.What institution would have loaned money for this boat?Even several years ago.

jcturbo6100 06-23-2010 10:35 AM

I can buy the boat cheap I think just got the call.....

I think i will buy it and just resale it the way it is....

Does anyone think i would have a problem gettin 11-12k for it

jcturbo6100 06-23-2010 10:36 AM

picture were readded

Audiofn 06-23-2010 11:30 AM

Yes I think you would. I got my Formula for a song and that was with running motors and only one drive missing. Took a little bit of wrenching to fix some stuff and needs some interior work. I think that 5-6 grand is tops.

TexomaPowerboater 06-23-2010 12:50 PM

In good shape probobly worth $30-35K, maybe 40K with new motors and new interior and good trailer. New motors will run you atleast $20K, you can back into the hull number $35-20= $15K with good drives fully rigged IMO. I think 10-15K as is, is reasonable. That ad posted is for a 33ft boat.

Man, what the hell was he thinking with the swim platforms and bilge vents......

fantastixvoyage 06-23-2010 12:55 PM

Like boats, there are some good deals on motors out there as well. Pair of 535hp/570tq in the swap shop for less than $15k, dyno time only :drink: That plus a $5-6k hull price would put this boat up and running & looking good for less than $25k i'd guess.

You forgot about the transmisions, tail shafts, wire harnesses......................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..

It all starts to add up. I have been down this road to many times to know that they are sellign cheap for a reason. :D

Says the guy with 3 boats in pieces!:party-smiley-004:

I can't imagine this being put back together and getting your money back. If it's exactly the boat you want, and you want a project then go for it.
