I think that the 496's are about 12-14K....with exhaust manifolds included.

Good reference on MSRP to see how much boat makers stick it to you on upgrades.

I paid around $13.5K for a 496HO five years ago. I looked around quite a bit. I could of got it slightly cheaper but paid a little more to deal with somebody local to me.

Spicy 06-16-2010 11:39 AM

Go with the 496HO (SPO program) they shuld be new just under 12K a piece with a 1 year warranty from mercury...

Mbam 06-16-2010 12:23 PM

Oops - no wonder we haven't sold any bobtails. Figure street price is about 30% off.

Is a "bobtail" a package without the drive? What would be the closest to a 502MAG price and installation-wise.....already have drives and exhaust. Weighting this or rebuild on three 502MAGs......

Griff 07-13-2010 12:55 AM

Rebuilding the 502mags would be a better and more cost option IMO. The 496's are going away and the 502's are back. You should be able to have the 502's R&R'd and rebuilt for around 20k by a reputable builder.

dykstra 07-13-2010 03:31 AM

I know you asked for new, but I saw this thread and thought it was a smokin deal.

Nort, yes bobtail is without drive/transom. 496's would have been the closest thing but they are gone. The new 502 is pricey as it has catalytic converters.

New 502 long blocks are available, might make more sense than rebuilds depending on condition of your blocks.

Audiofn 07-13-2010 06:01 AM

Nort something to think about with the new power would be that it would have closed cooling more then likely. That would be a good thing in a boat that stays in the water all the time.

smiklos@sunprint 07-13-2010 06:57 AM

Mbam

Can you PM me price for 377 shortblock?
Thanks
Steve

Marc

I just called you then I remembered I posted this thread. My engine guy was going to rebuild, then we figured it might be a little cheaper to get Merc facotry rebuild long blocks, but he left me a message saying that he can't seem to get a solid answer from Merc about WHEN the 3 long blocks would be available.

Looking for options.

Thanks!

Mbam 09-23-2010 02:45 PM

I see they are backordered. I am guessing they don't have any cores to build.

I have a pair of new 496 DTS coming in soon. You would have to install DTS controls to use them.

Oh - I didn't realize that was you!! The pair won't help unless we can find a third one.

Does that boat have the standard pedastal mounts?

Hey Marc

Yeah....that was me. :) Hmmmmm......496DTS......does that mean dual turbo systems? :D

I have no idea about the mounts. This me ya know. :D

Sydwayz 09-23-2010 10:40 PM

Nort, DTS is Digital Throttle & Shift

It means no more throttle and shift cables, everything is fly by wire.
You know, kinda like other stuff...

Mbam 09-24-2010 06:26 AM

Nort, can you post a picture of your engine mounts?

Hey Marc. Thanks for your info yesterday. Since nobody knows (including Mercury) when Mercury will have 3 long blocks available, we've decided to rebuild the three I have now.

TexomaPowerboater 09-24-2010 01:26 PM

Those 502 long blocks are slim pickens. Glad I got mine when I did. Derebery might be able to get you some.
