Hull Reccommendations

hello everyone i'm new around here looking for some help on a future boat purchase.

when i was a kid a local builder in the VI took a 23 monza hull mold and started putting sport decks on them. he make a few that were also 25. they were powered by 200 outboards and did around 50-55. ive always wanted one or something of that style.

i dont have a picture but it resembles the superboat 24.

on that note, as of right now i am looking at a few different used boats, but havent really ridden on many of them.

-24 superboat
-26 powerplay sport deck
-monza z-280 (not a sport deck, CC, but i have ridden one)

i dont do much if any offshore fishing, pretty much just island hopping. sport decks are wanted, but i can settle for a CC.

looking for something 55+ mph range, can handle medium chop, 25-30sih feet, outboard engine, and simple, i pretty much need a hull with a motor lol.

any recommendations and comparisons are greatly appreciated. as of now <50k please

thanks!

welcome to the site. Its tough to go wrong with any of those. The Superboat and Powerplay i am familiar with and they are both great boats. You may also want to look at one of Charlie Mccarthys Bannana Boats.

thanks, very interesting, are they in south florida? maybe i could meet up and see one of the used inventory, and possibly take a demo ride after i get back from work in a month

There is a 25 Powerplay in the classifieds here on OSO.

i am still up in the air with what i want to purchase, just researching right now, would prefer a single outboard for fuel reasons.
trying to make an educated decision

Check out my Sutphen. The 26 is an amazing rough water boat for its size and fast! If your looking for a great boat to get a feel of running a performance boat this could be you!

starting to narrow down on needs here:
-single O/B
-55+ mph
-able to take abuse, in the future it will most likely be left on a mooring ball, ran, not washed off. pretty much ridden hard and put away wet.
-able to take 4-5 foot chop on a regualr basis.

- going to be use for island hopping around the virgin islands, surf excursion, late night bar trips in the bvi. maybe a DD for work lol.
dont need all the fancy crap, want a fast hull that can take a beating, with an outboard motor that doesnt suck fuel, can jump into and go. no bathroom, matresses, pillows, carpet, electronics, or anything of that sort. a race boat that can be DD.

sixmassive 06-29-2010 04:01 AM

trying to get some more info on foutain40icbm's sutphen 26 setup.

and how it compares to the charlie built banana boat 24.

or any other suggestions to look into that matches the above criteria

thanks!

no 21 or 22 will be good in 4 to 5 ft chop even a 24 is small for that. the 26 sutphen will run the best 26 degree hull 8 ft beam I have freinds that had 26s that ran up to 98mph. if your going island hopping you should think of twins ob cause you loss one you got one to get you back. but I would look at DANS 26 he has for sale and if you have a chance theres a twin Saber 28 ob boat for sale which are known for rough water handling like sutphen 30s. if I can find it I will post back.

thanks! 4-5 is the most i would run in most likely. the island hopping i will be doing will all be in cell range and i know alot of ppl with boats on all the routes i will be going.

unless i take a trip to st, maartin or puerto rico. i e mailed about the RR SOB but nothing yet. havent seen the saber yet, i just looked. i would repower the RR to maybe twins depending on how it ran with that single though since it is cheapish

but the RR would be better than the banana? i have ruled out the superboat because of the 7' beam. i'll sacrifice for the extra room.

Have you considered an Active thunder?

what he said:grinser010:

24 Sonic is another optoin not taking anything away from the Sutphen..it is a very good rough water boat.

The 24 Sonic is very large for it size and has stand up bolsters and a high freeboard .....finding one may be difficult.

I personally do not like the checkmate but it fits your list. I also dont care for the low freeboard or look of the apache.

The Velocity is fast an is very nice looking however its is light and can get you in a lot of trouble very quickly in a 2+ foot chop..especially runing close to its top end.

Hustler also made a very capable twin outboard hull, I cant remember the size but I want to say 26...I could be wrong.

Heres some picts of a 24 Sonic with twin 2.4 liters 260 hp runnin ..also look at site www.screamandfly.com, all outboard powered boats there.

sixmassive 06-30-2010 01:45 PM

well so far all the researching i have been doing i think i am going to try for a charlie build banana 24 first. due for the 8' beam, and not being underpowered with a single 250. if not the search will continue.
Thank you for the help i will keep you updated.

please dont let this thread end, im sure it will be helpful to someone else down the road. the more info the better

sixmassive 07-01-2010 10:25 AM

so i just remembered another boat that i loved as a kid. it was a 24 scorpion with twin Johnson 350s with dry exhausts. boat was so fast and would blow by the 24 monzas. handled the seas like no other. the owner actually had a monza also called legal weapon. well a year or two after i rode on the scorpion, he was busted for running drugs and the boat sat at the CG dock in St. Thomas for a month or so. got to look at it everyday before and after school. then one day it was gone.. . probably destroyed. :(
i cant find too much info on them

TexomaPowerboater 07-01-2010 10:37 AM

Sounds like this boat fits your needs to the T.

25 Chief with single 300 promax. http://maryland.freeboatshopper.com/...p-pro-max.html
Not sure what the scoop is on the "chief" name. Make sure its a saccenti boat. Eric Froberg here on OSO would know.

sixmassive 07-11-2010 12:37 PM

what about these:
28 carrea with twin 300xs
27 magnum with twin yamaha vmax 2.5s

thanks

Shhhhh

turbo rr 07-12-2010 10:50 PM

The green and white boat that was docked by the coast guard dock was a condor.

A boat for you to really consider is the 25 powerplay. There was one in miami that looked like a good deal....it was somewhere around 15k.
