I agree- if bigger water is in your destination list, pass by the 242 for at least a 272.
Our 242 was great for the Mississippi River, but it was (and felt) damnn small on Lake Michigan. The only thing we got out there with the little Formula was an azz-kickin', except on the very calm and smooth days. It does have it's limitations.....

i know this thread is a few months old but i have an 86 242ls with bolsters and twin 350s, SR-1? i'm not much of a boat person. only stuff i've owned was outboard skiffs. if anyone is interested. needs some work but i have harldy any money in it. would make an excellent project. i dont have the time or money to fool with it. bought boat and trailer cause friend wanted the trailer. boat is blocked in my yard. i'd love for someone to get it and fix it up. shame for me to let it sit. let me know if anyone is looking.

Definitely get the latest model you can, so that at minimum you get the fiberglass "silent thunder" swim platform instead of the teak.

You want the LS model, if you're wanting bolsters, & the more "performance" oriented design vs the SS model. The SS has more cockpit space & less cabin space, where the LS has less cockpit space & more cabin space. The last year they made them you could get a 502 in them, & they would run almost 70mph propped correctly.

I worked at a marina as a kid that sold Formulas up until just recently, & sold a CHITload of 223's, 242's, 272's, & 311's. Only one 292 strangely, & one 357. 2 419's.
