Power Stroke gas mileage?
I have a buddy with a 2002 PS 4X4 Excursion. His city gas mileage is slightly over 10MPG. He ran the truck form Chicago to Florida and back and averaged just over 15MPG. The truck has 4500 miles on it. He doesn’t use it to tow. What kind of mileage should he be getting? Any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks, Dan |
My dad has a 2000 f-250 4x4 gets 16mpg
|
Dan,
Something is not right. I consistantly get 15-17mpg city miles and 17-20 mpg on highway miles. This was fairly steady since about 4000 miles all the way to 7500 which is where the truck sits now. What is his driving style? Is he a hard accelerator? Dan |
I have a '99 f-350 Supercab PSD and get an average of 14 mpg. I have a ATS chip in it that gave me about 1-2 mpg. So he is about right. That Excursion is a big monkey!! Very heavy.

I'm on my 3rd Power Stroke in 6 years and this one has the worst milelage of all. My 1996 F-250 4X4 got over 20 miles to the gallon on the xway, 1998 F-250 4X4 got about 16 to 18 miles to the gallon and my 2000 F-350 Dullie 4X4 gets only 12-14 miles to the gallon highway driving. Goverment regulations on the Diesel emission is really putting the hurt on MPG. All I can say is stick with the Diesel dollor for dollor it's the best buy. |
my 2001 F250 PSD 4X4 Crew gets about 14 - 16 hwy (pretty much a lead foot though). About 12 or so towing
My 97 F 350 Crew Dually PSD gets worse (10 -12) but is geared lower |
Power Stroke gas mileage
2001 Excursion PSD 18 highway and 13-15 towing 10k. 20k miles and we gained about 1-3 mpg. I hope this helps.
|
'99 Ford 350 PSD, SRW, 16 mpg combined with a light foot.
|
my last PSD in a F-350 got around 10-11 in town and no tmuch better on the highway .. I'm have a very heavy foot though.. the one before that was pretty close to the same......this was a work truck with quite a load on it.... I would think that the Exc should be getting somewhat better...
|
Thanks for the replies. I am not sure of his driving style. I know I use the gas pedal in my D-Max like an on-off switch. :D I average 15.8 city miles. When he told me his I figured there has to be something wrong. I plan to print this thread and give it to him. I am also going to give him the thread on chips for the PS.
ThunderDan, What gear ratio are you running in your Excursion? I wonder if maybe he has a bigger gear ratio. Thanks again, Dan |
I have neve rtried the chips. ... or K-N on mine. as they were work trucks... company provided... but a friend has and really did notice some diff...in both mileage and certianly hp.....good luck
oru Ex is a v-10 and we get 11 all day everyday  |
I have a 3.73 limited slip rear and I drive with a pretty light foot. If I am going to give it to boot to put a three stage chip and do some exhaust mods to increase it even more.

I have a 2000 PSD 'X' and just completed a Chicago-Pompano-Holland, MI trip in it. Going down (not towing) and running 75 mph
I averaged close to 18 mpg, coming back towing a 28' AT I got a little better than 12, at 70 mph or so. These are computed numbers the old fashioned way, not off the overhead trip computer. Truck has 20K on it, and is SCMT programmed(60 hp). Last load of fuel in no. Indiana was blended, and mileage dropped over 2 mpg to Holland. The X is extremely heavy compared to its pickup brothers, but still a far cry better on fuel than the V10 trucks I've had. I'm extremely pleased with its performance! |
candyman,
Have you ever checked out thedieselpage.com? Its similar to oso except their hot rodding their diesels. I hear ya on the dmax, mine didn't come with the gas mileage option either. I cant stop slamming the gas pedel to the floor.:D |
mpg
i have a 01 f350 crew cab duel ps. I get no better then 12 not towing. Put a 80 hp chip and did not get any better. I've has 6 ps and this is the worst is been. 97 got 20 I had 3 durmax and they all got about 17 to 20
|
This is what I have noticed with mine. First off I get average about 16-17mpg with out towing and we got 12-12.5mpg towing a 1991 38 topgun home from LOTO. I have a 1999 F-350 DRW Crew Cab 4X4. I have noticed that if you take it up over 70mph it seems to hit a brick wall and use up a LOT more gas. I have not seen much difference in over all gas economy if I am heavy or light on the peddal to get me there. :D

2000 F-250 Suoer Cab Diesel 4X4 auto, 8" lift w/ 37's. Heavy foot in town, cruise 80-ish on the freeway. 11-12 no matter what, 9-ish towing. Oh yeah.......... For Sale!
|
Man, I can't believe some of these mileage results you guys are getting. Apparently the EPA has stuck their damned nose in the diesels now! My moldy oldie 97 F350 CC SRW PSD (just turned 77k today) gets mid teens on freeways, and low 20's on a trip. Even towing I am getting about 12-14 mpg.
|
I can't beleive how bad some of these numbers are !
My 89 f350 with 40" tires got 18mpg , 94 got 19-21, (2) 97's got 18 99 dualy got 14 99 single wheel got 17 2000 got 18mpg, I got 12 pulling my 12' wide 39' cat grossing 26,000 lbs at 75 mph ! my brothers 2000 ,same truck ,gets 15 for him and 17.5 for me , 2002 haven't figured normal driving yet but with the full western diesel package ,ram air , 3 stage chip ,and exhaust ,I took a quick trip to NY .530 miles ran real hard (about 90)with chip on high power . I got exactly 18 mpg  runing around town with chip on high I get about 16 . It's that same old "lead foot disease ". I am trying to calculate an honest milage with chip on lower setting but I can't leave that switch on low for some reason ! The "X" will burn a little more then a truck but some of these numbers are scarry . I am in the trailer and towing buisness and I don't know of any of my customers getting less then 14 with just the truck . I think some of you just have a big foot ! (like my brother )Also regular service makes a big difference . Service it every 3,000 miles . Some one said they added a chip and saw no improvment . You have to have a good air intake and exhaust to make it more efficient . Some guys (with a GOOD chip ) see mpg improvments with just the chip .Depends on the chip and who is driving . |
My 2001 crew cab 4x4 powerstroke gets 16 city and 20 hwy. It also has a hypertech powerprogramer in it.

2000 F-350 four dually short bed.

While using my Expedition to pull my 42' F to the launch the last couple of weeks, the rear end seemed to sag a little (even with load levelers), I just cant figure it out:confused: ; and I think it was averaging about 1 mile per gallon, maybe I need a chip. :D Thank Goodness for In/out Service:cool:
|
Chad, you are too f***in funny. It couldn't have looked as bad as when you towed mine home. I wonder how it would do behind my tacoma?:D
|
Thanks for all of the replies. I think he is going to take the truck in to be looked at. I am surprised that the mileage numbers are all over the place. I know my numbers are low because of my driving style, Floorboarded. :D Is there anything in the fuel management that can cause these things to get such poor mileage short of a raw fuel pouring on the street? I'm new to this diesel stuff. I know I'll never own another gas tow vehicle.
Hey Boot, How are the chips working for the D-Max? Dan |
Hey MIdnightRider,
42' with triples behind an Expedition? Dude, we need to talk. I have an Expedition with air ride. I wouldn't pull a 27' much less your 42'. Were you aware of the recall on the Expedition because of trailer hitches falling off? How’s your boat? Did you start on the dash yet? I just finished my dash project. Lots of fun. It was definitely worth the work. Dan |
My truck had the recall done. If I had the money you guys do, I would pull with the excursion, but as it is, my expo works for the 1 mile it is from the shop to the launch. Its up on the rack now for in/out service. My dash is still in process, I am just to busy, plus I just paid the marina bill, and the wife's no holds barred shopping trip last week in Chicago, not to mention my no holds barred drinking trip to Chicago( I would like to thank the White Star Club for treating us so well, and not brooming me out when I had to throw out my kick stand):D I figure Once the Big Shooter Pocket Change gets done with his 10k renovation on his 42, Mine will look like the Ghetto Ride it is anyway. ( the wife is trying to keep me from keepin up, no vette, less beer, less stereo, whats next?, just dont say more kisses and cuttles.) I did finally learn how to drive it though, it helps when you shift it forward that it isn,t goin in reverse( long story, star cable hooks on the shifter opposite the rest)
|
MIdnight,
If I had your money I'd have a 42' with triples and not my 35'. :D I hate when the cables get reversed. I thought you were engaged. Did the big event happen and if so Congratulations. See post “wife for sale”. :D :D :D Latter, Dan |
I'm actually getting married in November, but she lives with me, we might as well be. I love her to death, but sometimes women are a pain. She is great though, her and I lit it up in Chi Town, she was dancin on the bar at Bar Chicago, showin her G-sting, She's a cutie, and can be fun. But there are days when I could trade up. We startin our season offically tomorrow, I brought the boat to the marina on Wednesday. I am pumped, Fountain's just look sweet sittin in the water. Good job Reggie:cool:

candyman35, THat chip will wake up that chevy !
:D They are a little more mild stock then what chevy claims . WD was dynoing them for a while with a GM rep . THey were only doing 198 hp on the ground stock  Where is the 325 they claim ? I have set up a few for towing and was very disapointed with how they ran stock . Now don't you guys jump all over me for saying that ! Just stating what I see as I drive ALL makes every day . I do about 300 hitch installs every year . I was just a little disapointed with the chevy . |
Chad - did you finally get that Radioshack CD player with the Krako speakers installed? I know where yu can get a EQ for $49 that will rally pump out the distortion:D
Rick ps - ordered the motor yesterday, the guy is dropping it off to me for free when he brings a couple other motors up to k-zoo in a week or so. I got it fully dressed, so all we have to do is put the manifolds on, drop it in, hook up the exhaust and go (yea right) |

My last Powerstroke was in a 1997 F-250 (old body style) and it would get 22-24 mpg on the highway. It had 3.73 gears and the Gale Banks Power Pac.
The new Powerstroke is in a 2002 F-450 Crew Cab Dually and it is only getting 16 mpg on the highway. This engine is bone stock for now and the truck has 4.30 gears so this explains the mileage...but it is a towing machine!!!! |

2000 F-250 crew SB. Stock except for K&N. 18.5 MPG combined city /highway. If under 60 MPH on highway, ~22 MPG. If towing #7000 @~70-75 MPH, highway MPG drops to low mid teens.
