deadliest catch and phil harris
Watched the shows tonight and that sea was incredible while he was sick.
after he passed away the sea was dead calm. Just incredible how things happen sometimes. The tribute show was very cool as well and really showed how great a guy he was and how well respected |

I suspect that there were not too many dry eyes watching that show last night...
RIP, Phil. |
Those seas were INCREDIBLE. I could not imagine being out there, even in ships of those size; especially after hearing what happened to his Dad's ship years ago.
|
Two good episodes. He will be missed.
|
I watched both episodes as well. He lived a HARD life in terms of booze, drugs, hookers, bikes, etc. Imagine making $130K in a month as a teenager in the late 70's? I'd be an A-hole with the money too!
|
It was a tear jerker My wife was balling! I got her hooked on Deadliest Catch a couple years ago. They should win a most dramatic series award for this years show's. Party on Phil...
|
Quite a story. Best of luck to the boys...I'm sure the Hillstrands will help them through this. They seem like good guys too
RIP Captain Harris |
Shame that Captain Phil died, but he definatly Lived !
|
I do have to say...
As much as I have come to re-like the show, I think it's on purpose. The editors can make timing and story come together however they want. The storm and timing of Phil's death may not have coincided. The viewership tends to "legend-ize" these guys; and I'm not saying without reason. For those of you who have watched the show for years, I think you can tell that the show changed from a documentary to a real-life drama series as the producers and editors tuned their learning curve. It's still well done, and those fisherman have balls that clank. |
During the whole show I was thinking about my Father who had a commercial fishing license on a very small scale. fished to pay for the boat, fuel, ect. I can say there where tears on my cheeks remembering fishing with him.

As it was coming to production they also decided to make Dirty Jobs and wanted him to front that (also his idea) so they cut all his footage from the crabbing show and that is what became "Catch". |
I will be the first to admit I was a cryer last night. Capt. Phil Harris took the adage "Live like there's no tomorrow" to heart. Jake and Josh now have a lot of video of their time with their dad on the boat thanks to Discovery.
You have to admit that Phil Harris was a he!! of a man to have touched so many lives. RIP Capt. Phil |
He was by far my favorite of the show. He seemed like one of those guys that would sit and talk to you for hours if you bumped into him on the street. I know other boats do it too but you have to respect a man who is willing to risk his sons lives not just guys he hired off the street, if I was a deckhand I'd have even more confidence that he'llget me home alive knowing his only children are working alongside me. He is going to be missed, but he left a mark on this world that means so much to so many people that he will never be forgotten.
|
RIP Captain Phill. Last night was a sad episode. It was very cool to see his life from a kid until he passed away. You could tell from the other captains and crew members he was respected. In my mind you can't make that chit up. The expression on Cig's face "Captain of the Northwesten" was gut turning after he found out Phill passed away.

I have not seen last nights episode yet I have been on vacation but will watch it as soon as I get home. Last weeks episode was sad.
I really hope that his younger son pulls it together and gets off the drugs. |

It is incredible. I've been in and around the funeral business my entire life and witness occurrences like that all the time. I could write a book that would shiver your spine!
So I said if I am not wasting my time and you can hear me let me see your name in my email or something in the next couple of days. Now I had never seen his name in print anywhere really because he lived far away. The next day his xmas card I sent him was retuned. (IN JUNE) with his name on it! talk about shivers down my spine. It was bitter sweet because I now knew he had never gotten to see a picture of my little boy before he passed. tore my heart out to be honest. I did feel like he could hear me though and I never really believed in that type of thing before that day |

Phil had all kinds of troubles with the mechanicals on the boat this past year, you could see he was wicked stressed all the time. I am one of those guys whos always analyzing the situation at hand and stressing about it so I know how it takes its toll on you. They showed him tapping his foot all day long and rubbing his hands etc Thats Stressand it wipes you out. thats probably why he liked to let loose and run fast cars and motorcycles etc. I wonder if any of those guys have fast boats or if they are so sick of boats they just want to be on land? |
RIP Phil. Definitely seemed like a cool guy and I'll miss him from the show.
|
30 ct sutphen, I have seen the hillstrands have been on the geico race boat several times.

While I agree with that, I think there is also a learning curve by the guys. They have found what will get them more air time and I know for a fact have staged "incidents" to make some drama. Whether this is done with the approval of Discovery or not I have no idea. They still do everyday business and some of the stuff that happens is part of that, but there is an effort to make the show more interesting, not knocking it, it is a great show.

The same goes for the perfect storm, I remember reading of in RD, as well as living in New England at the Time. |

Interesting, I remember reading a story in Reader's Digest back in the 90's, regarding Crabbing in alaska, and when the first series came out. it was very much like the reader's Digest.
The same goes for the perfect storm, I remember reading of in RD, as well as living in New England at the Time. I'm pretty sure there was a documentary on crab fishing, maybe even on Discovery, before the show too. I think Mike's idea was to follow the season and see all the interpersonal stuff. I mean you can get the mechanics of the whole thing into about a 15 minute show right? He really did not want to be the host of Dirty Jobs, but Discovery made him do it. Obviously they knew better. But he did say he is on the road 300 days a year, which kinda cuts into your fun time, as you well know, huh Pete? |
Edgar is another very knowledgeable guy, I never knew why he wasnt running his own boat.
Just recently realized he was sigs little brother. That explains allot. Id like to see him get his own ride on the show. |
I think he is part owner of the Northwestern.
|
Those last few episodes were rough... very moving to say the least!
|
He was a wild guy! The best was when they switch the two Jakes ! Phil - put him in a survival suit ,dump a pot ,hook him to it then back up and I'll get him. I would of been like WHAT!! RIP
|
The funniest part of the series was when the Northwestern guys pulled one of Phil's pots and replaced it with an old P.O.S. truck when they heard Phil wanted to get a new truck.
These guys are the salt of the earth. They are a very close tight-knit bunch. My grandfather was a commercial fisherman on the western basin of Lake Erie. He died of skin cancer in 1964 when I was 3 years old. About 5 years ago, I was out for a drive along the lake on a cold Sunday morning in February. I saw on old-timer seining for minnows in an opening in the ice out at Mienke's Marina. Something made me get out of the car to go talk with him. After a brief conversation, he asked who my grandfather was. He still remembered him more than 40 years later. It was a very cool and unexpected encounter. Just before Phil had his stroke, I took care of a patient in the ER out here in Las Vegas who was from Dutch Harbor, Alaska. She knew these people personally, and in particular one of Phil's sons. I told her of my grandfather and how much I enjoyed the show. I also gave her my personal business card to give to Phil's son, and told her that if there was ever anything I could do for any of them to give me a call. Another strange premonition ... |
I'll tell you all how it is for real next spring!! I'm leaving Oct.4 this year to make the King Crab seaon which starts Oct. 15 I've already done/gone through many interviews this summer and now have a tough decision of what boat to choose. Some of thte boats on DC aren't even close to being the top $$$$ makers for each season of crab being fished. F/V Time Bandit is one of the boats that's on my list but in the middle of the money which is what it's all about.
And of course R.I.P. Capt. Phill Harris |
