checkmate cat
Looking for the red and white Checkmate cat. Friend has the black one called Topaz racing. I was told only 2 were made.
|
I know where the molds are for them.

Never heard of a Checkmate cat....interesting. Anyone have a pic?

I think they were 25 feet long.

The molds are sitting in Brewerton N.Y. hull & deck, been there awhile now.

I saw one of them (red & white I believe) at the factory many years ago when we used to pick the ones we sold up directly. I was told that it was a failed experiment.

I think I've got the original brochure with this boat in it. I will see if i can dig it out and scan it.

George designed it, we (Conquest) built the plug. Some changes were made to that plug after delivery at Checkmate and the result did not perform as well as it should have. A lot of finger pointing ended with an arbitration hearing in NYC a few years later, and the parties reached a settlement. The model was discontinued almost at inception and there are a couple still around (1 at K&K Outboard on Long Island).
I am sorry the project ever happened.......... T2x |

Interesting. What year did the "settlement" take place?

Before I mis-write anything here, help me out here.
Did Baja ever have an ill fated attempt at producing a cat? |

Back in the late 60's both Checkmate and Baja produced single engine outboard racing tunnel boats....both based on the Glastron/Molinari. At that time the largest boat that either company made was perhaps 18 or 19 feet in their pleasure boat line. To my knowledge Checkmates only other attempt at building a cat was the one listed earlier in this thread. I believe Baja put it's "brand" name on a few of the racing 32 foot Active Cats built in Michigan in the early 80's, but Baja did not actually build those boats.

Rich, really enjoy your posts. Straight, to the point, and more informative then an "All you wanted to know about Offshore Racing - past and present" book.
Thank you......... |
Sounds interesting... never heard of it but would like to see!

Ok, here goes. Rich, this is why I asked about the year that the settlement took place. The time which this occured is between May of 03 and April of 04. I was in Jim Jones (no not the Sinster Minister) office discussing something about my boat. He showed me a brochure on a Cat that was between 28-30' in length. Damn if I can remember if it was from Checkmate or Baja. Was definately one of the two. Story goes that they (either Checkmate or Baja) were shopping that boat around looking for a manufacturer to purchase it. Jim was entertaining (I am choosing my words carefully here) the idea of partnering up with someone (with money) to produce the boat in question. I remember something to the effect "Jim, with a 28 single and a 31 twin, what the hell do you need that for?" Answer-----ahh, you know what it is.
Bottom line, the boat in question was being shopped around as late as 2004. Maybe later? Someone still holding on to the molds? |
