Does a better flame arrestor make a difference...?
I have a 1966 ford hi po engine that has few hours and has been out of the boat and refreshed this summer. It run fine, it is a balanced 289 high compression (10.5) with about 260+ hp for my little boat. It still has the original flame arrestor on it from 1966. I'm just considering, but would a newer flame arrestor make a difference?

If it's one of the small 2" tall models, then yes. They do not flow very much air. Something the size of the ones merc put on the HP 500's would work much better. They can be found for cheap as well.

Yes it is about 2" tall and maybe 8" diameter. Do you have a link or a pic of the one you are suggesting? Does it look similar to the one I have?

the donzi caught my eye....when i was a very young kid i would have given anything to have one of these! never thought i would be racing for them!
the air flow on 260hp is not that much....take it off and see if it makes a difference. a boat is effectively a water brake dyno. but, none the less a cool looking AF/FA can spruce up an engine. |
Umm, educate me a little on that outdrive...lol. Never seen one able to pivot like that. What is it?

I always get some comments or looks on the road. Its the Eaton Series sixteen from the factory...it has had a rebuild of gears and shafts with better materials and runs fine...here are a few pics

Man, that's wild. I definitely have never seen that. You learn something new every day!

so the drive swings upside down?
|
yep, unlock the big lockout pin, unhook steering linkage, unhook shift cable and it just rotates 180 and locks in place upside down for trailering. Reverse for launching. Doesn't always go that smooth at the boat ramp though. We may try rotating it before backing up and it's floating, then slowly backing it into the water (the skeg is really close to the pavement so we might figure out a way to manually tilt it up while backing down the ramp.
Maybe I should start a thread on my old drive... one more pic to help see the drive http://www.donzi.net/forums/attachme...3&d=1281918811 |
