chevy truck question

I have a chance to buy a 2001 2500 hd Ls with a 496 and alison trans and 150k mil. for $6700 how did the 496 hold up in trucks.

Great truck, runs strong, just a gas hog. Way cheaper than a diesel though so that buys a lot of gas!

The only real common issue is a problem with the crank position sensor. It can cause it to be tough to start sometimes. It was recalled on the early builds, and has been replaced on many. Mine needs one, but it just takes several times to start occasionally so it's not a big deal to me.

I put 100k on my 01, Had to do the Trans case at around 70k. Used about 1 qt oil per 1k miles. Never smoked not sure were it went. Still had factory brakes.
CC long bed 2500. Pulled my 29 outlaw no problem.

o yea the gas hog is right 10mpg Period

I have seen them go for 300k with not a lot of trouble. Price is not that bad either but have seen them as low as 5k in your area.

Gas hog is an understatement. When heading up to the UP snowmobiling (4 place enclosed trailer) it was cheaper to take my 1500 Sierra and throw a dollar out the window every miles than take my friends 2500HD 496. I think he would get 6-7mpg no matter what he pulled. I loved that truck though.

I wouldn't touch one. Although I'm partial to my Duramax's. The power, fuel mileage, reliability, resale value are all worth the extra money imo.

I have been driving an '07 since new. It has 85k on it now and what Quinlan said is true, it used 2 quarts in the first 3000 miles. Chevy said that was normal, and if it used more than a quart in 500 miles then they would look at it. It runs great as long as I keep oil and gas in it!

what hp is the 496?

Price is very fair and that truck will be a work horse for years to come. Put another 100k on it and it'll still fetch $4K.

I bought a Suburban 2500 with the 8.1 this season to tow with, no complaints here. Has 89k on the odo. Have put very few miles on it since I bought it since the ramp is only a few miles from home. However, I did in fact take a 260mi trip with it today. It is thirsty, but the 8.1 is a damn good motor. Search around the net and you will find tons of praise and very few complaints....mpgs notwithstanding, lol.

The truck itself you have zero to worry about regarding high miles. My other '00 Chevy has 212K on the clock and it's still nice and tight. I love that truck and doubt I will ever part with it.
