Unhappy Without Racers, The Sponsorship Support Goes Too !

Wall Stadium goes silent once again....

I rarely ever go there but I am sure for those that do, this just has to feel like a part of them has gone away.

The track has been there for 60 years and has now closed once again...

I recall the owners were trying to get a year round income on this property with the idea of using their parking lot for a Drive-In Theater and other possible activities that would support the track, but the township turned them down...

Another sad day in racing.....

Unhappy

It is a shame. In my younger years, I spent a lot of Saturdays at Wall, initially in the grandstands, and eventually in the pits. A spectacular little local track. As I got older, I worked on a couple of the cars that ran there, even hot lapped a few in practice.

I really feel bad for the racers. After a hard day's work, they spend hours in the garage year round, just to get their cars ready to run. Many don't have 2 dimes to rub together...but somehow find a way to race due to their love of the sport. I REALLY feel bad for those guys. They're really left out in the cold.

Hope they can figure out a way to get the track operating again.

I watched this video this morning, and this thread made me think of it. I bet he had these guys in mind when he wrote it.

I forgot, I had fired off a few shots as I flew over the track after the Point Pleasant Beach Race last season:

Here is "The STRIP" of Asbury Park long after the days of flicking the toggle switch to light up the Reverse Lights on the car indicating you wanted to race... Ah those were some good times.....

How it looks in 2010, 6 years later....
The Stone Pony still stands and a new foundation up the street replaced the old foundation for a future high rise which too now sits in ruins as the work has stopped some time ago...

I worked 9 years for John Scher who put on the shows at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, The Capitol Theatre in Passaic,NJ to name a few. If I had the money I would restore It and have shows there again.

Guess I did most of that from around '84-91 or so. Was on the crew for Doug Sutphin's sportsman, which eventually became the Modified Affordable Division. Doug ran a blue #9. Some might remember Doug because he was Bruce Springsteen's road manager, and he couldn't spend a day in the pits without being hit up for some tkts. A bit later they ran a black Ford powered #9 with a very cool Pontiac coupe body. Steve Rogers (sr) was driving the car at that point, I think. Also did work on Ted Walter's cars over the years.

......seems like a million years ago.
