What spares/tools do you carry onboard

I think I asked this last year, but please refresh my memory. List in order of your priority if you can.

thanks,

Mark

Pretty much what Troutly listed. I bought one of those "all in one" tool boxes from West Marine and figured it was better than nothing in the event of needing a tool.

I also carry a nice big chunk of wood to aide in removing a prop in case I need to change one out on the water ;)

SeaDated 05-08-2002 07:08 AM

Good list Troutly. I added just a few things to that list.

Set of spark plugs
Longest plug wire
Coil wire
Dist. cap and rotor
Thrust washer, prop nut, and locking tab
Flash light
Misc. stainless hardware
Zip-ties

...And with all the extra tools and parts I'm still broke...ONE EXTRA BEER!!

spares/tools

The lists above are great. I also carry crimp terminals, 25-30 ft # 12 stranded wire, and a few other things. I carry my tools in a 50 caliber ammo box so they stay totally free of moisture. I carry spare fuel filters, voltage testers, spare lamps for every light and assorted nuts and bolts in a box similar to a fishing tackle box with some tabs removed for large items.

I carry boat registration and first aid in another ammo box.

It seems I carry more "stuff" every year. I often travel 200 miles or more from home port so I carry more than some boaters need.

A screwdriver and a cloth hanger, when you run CLE'S you never know when one will become clogged!!

CayFomula 05-08-2002 08:18 AM

Here are some things I carry in addition to those listed so far:

Belts
Hose clamps
Cable ties
Transmission fluid for drives/tabs
WD40
knife
Ignition coil

Carrying all the stuff Troutly takes along will drop top speed by at least 1 or 2MPH. What are you thinking?:D

Madcow 05-08-2002 11:21 AM

The portaable battery jumper is a great item for on board. Came in handy once last year.

Gary Anderson 05-08-2002 11:28 AM

Troutlys list plus air compressor, complete set of air tools (impact, ratchet, grinder, drill, hammer) various electrical supplies (spark checker, VOM, strippers, wire, connectors), canvas/vinyl repair stuff.
I know it's overkill, but I think I have a tool related OCD.
Worst tools: Easyout
Best tools: Case of beer

ALL YOU CAN CARRY + MORE

thunderdan 05-08-2002 09:14 PM

I carry bubblegum and a clothes hanger. You would be amazed at what you can do with these two things.:D :p

I carry everything that troutly mentioned, plus some spark plugs, an extra washer and prop nut, and prop.

mcollinstn 05-08-2002 09:59 PM

Speedometer tool: 2" length of 1/2"diameter wood dowel with a .090" drill bit epoxied into it. Use it to clear debris from the speedo pickup. Hop in the water and do it blindly. If you drop it, it "falls" to the surface (wood floats).

Jumper cables. Flashlight w/spare batts. WalMart tool kit plus good pair of Klein lineman pliers. Some wire and a $6 multimeter. Transmission Fluid (for trim and power steering) in addition to engine oil and drive lube. Spare assortment of fuses. A few bulbs (nav/stern lignt bulbs, courtesy light bulbs). Tube of waterproof grease. Bar of soap and some Goop (for cleaningh hands and/or arms after fixing). Plastic bucket of assorted stainless fasteners, lockwashers, nylock nuts, and stainless safety wire. Roll of mechanic towels from AutoZone. Small spray bottle of Dawn dishwasher liquid and water to spray on any gas discharge when fueling. Can of starting fluid (ether) to use for starting and for parts cleaning. Can of "liquid electrical tape" for waterproofing.
Prop wrench and sparkplug teehandle.

I keep stuff in a PLASTIC box styled after an ammo box. It has a rubber gasket that makes it fairly watertight.

MACDAD260 05-08-2002 10:04 PM

All of the above!

This year I went to Menards and bought a "Gatemouth Jr." tool bag. It is the coolest thing to put your main tools in! It zips shut and when open you can store lots of stuff in the little pouches on the inside. It make finding you tools easy, especially screwdrivers, nutdrivers, pliers, vise grips, etc. Plenty of room for wrenches and sockets, too. Check it out.

boot 05-08-2002 10:17 PM

ALL of the above (exept air tools :D )

PLUS : pipe wrench , big hammer ,little hammer , thick work blanket ( to keep from getting burt working around motor ) , spare 1 1/4" hose for water pick up ,( broke one and almost sunk ), timing light , lots of rags and hand cleaner , and spare blower belt !

kwb 05-09-2002 12:11 AM

good suggestions...

I would add a water impeller to the list and (1) each of all the belts on the motor and tie wraps.

Luke_Chinewalker 05-09-2002 12:18 AM

my suggestion would be to buy a triple engine boat but only run on 2 engines that way if you blow an engine or drive you can start up the spare engine and continue on your journey:D

MIdnightRider 05-09-2002 12:55 AM

That just triples your chances for the need of more tools and parts. I have had the most need for spare starters in the past. But I carry enough **** to fix about anything, and it always seems to come back to my favorite tool when it gets to that point, BEER, and lots of it.:D

Luke_Chinewalker 05-09-2002 01:09 AM

well i guess if you have a single engine boat and it breaks down you could always make like a viking and get the oars out

cobra marty 05-09-2002 01:48 AM

So if you take all that, Then what tools are left home in the tool box?

Gary Anderson 05-09-2002 09:21 AM

If you want to cut it to a bare minimum, I've found 3 items that can fix any problem;
1) Money
2) Guns
3) Duct Tape
Gary

The Wizard 05-09-2002 09:55 AM

The only thing I carry on the boat is a 9 iron. When something breaks, I club the sh*t out of the fu*k*n thing...then it repairs it self!!! Great tool:confused::confused::D:D

;)zzie
