Is brand more important than a deal in 2010?
This is a hypothetical question, Is brand more important than a deal in 2010? I gave two similar equipped boats as examples but you can insert any two similar boats.
If you can buy a new 95+ MPH 38 Fountain w/525's for 189K ( http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o33984-en.html ) is that a better deal than a slower 38 Cig (88 MPH) for almost double (349K): http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o33997-en.html
Both boats are new (no repo/used boat comparisons), identical power, even similar paint.
Considerations:
1. Price
2. Resale (obviously the Fountain will have lower resale but remember it started lower, a lot lower). So to be fair use a percentage loss comparision. Assume a 50% loss in 3 years on each.
3. Usage- Would you have a better time/more fun in one boat over the other?
4. Costs of ownership- should be real close, fuel burn/maintenance should be identical. Insurance will be higher for the higher priced boat
Now propose a 3 year ownership plan on both boats. Would the guy that bought the Fountain be the smarter buyer? Consider he would still have enough money leftover to buy another boat in cash!

I would think there aren't that many people buying boats in those price ranges that really need to wait and answer those questions. For those that do, obviously they'd be buying the Fountain.
The reason I say this is because of your 3-year plan. If you plan to own something for 3 years where you know you'll lose between $90k and $175k, you're fairly well off. There are those that have lots of money, and still prefer the deal. And there are those that will not settle for anything other than the top brands. There maybe some out there that have pinched and saved, and can finally afford a boat. Then, those question would be important, they'd buy the Fountain, and keep it much longer than 3 years.
I doubt there are many potential customers left out there like last decade, so your questions may not be important. But brand is more important to most as the price climbs higher and higher. I doubt you'll find that many people looking at both of the boats you've described seriously. They're more likely to go after the Cig and haggle.

In my opinion your getting a little more boat with Cig... but not enough to justify the cost. Their is definitely a 'status' that comes with that number 1 on the side and that also goes for brands like outerlimits and nortech etc... I guess if you can afford it go for it but my ultimate goal is a 38 PQ/Fountain/Powerplay just do to the fact that unless I hit the lotto I can't justify the extra cash for the name.

A similar comparison in a different performance world would be American vs European supercars... is having a prancing horse or a raging bull on your hood worth an extra 200k over a Z06 Vette or Viper? Of course not especially when the vette and viper are faster to begin with on and off the track (using old pushrod motors and a real manual trans at that)- but some people have to have the name to feel good about themselves I guess

IMO the Cig is definitely the better boat but no way I'd spend the difference.....and there are several 2008-2009 700NXT 39's for sale from $339-379K. No way that 38 will sell around $349K

If I take the OP's question literally, only those that can easily write a check for $35k can give a good answer. I don't think there is a "smart answer" to this question either. If you can afford the Cig, you can either buy it or not.
