Default What Will This Do to Value?

I understand that value is a fine line for what one will pay for something and what one is willing to sell something for. In our own minds (whether being the buyer or the seller) the value can sometimes be miles apart.

More specifically what I am looking for is whether it will be value added or value removed to an engine that has work done on it. I have a lightly used 2007 496HO with less than 100 hours that I am wanting to do some major upgrades on through a very well know marine performance shop (they build race engines). It will be a naturally-aspirated engine in the 575HP range.

My concern is will this increase or decrease the value of this engine/boat when it comes time to possibly sell it.

Number one concern is that this engine is built by the correct guy/shop and done correctly with ZERO corners cut. But if in the long run it will hurt it even more than I would like to know now before getting the wheels in motion.

Thanks for reading and thanks for offering your help.

It will most likely make the boat harder to sell later.

Your 496HO is probably worth more as a complete engine than the parts off of it that you would use the new build. I would sell your engine complete and then start from scratch.

Stock always seems to be better when selling since the buyer knows what they are getting unless it is a nationally known marine builder like Teague or Pfaff or Zul.

Thank you guys for the reply.

Griff... basically that is that we will be doing. The only thing that will be used is the crank. But what suggestions do you have for starting from scratch?

Preserve the 496HO, pull it and put it on a pallet in the corner.

Build yourself a new engine with the HP you want, and then you can offer the buyer a choice in come resale time.

x3 That makes the most sense to me too.

FWIW, I'd pay a little more for a well done modded 496HO than I would for a stock 496HO. But then again, I wouldn't even consider a stock 496HO. I know a lot of guys look for stock power, but I have no interest in a slug engine. I wont even look at a boat with 500EFI, even though I know a lot of folks love these engines too.

So I guess it all depends on the buyer.

If I am a buyer I am also going to look at what drive you have. If you are really putting that kind of HP (575) I would expect to see an upgraded drive (XR) on it, but that is just me.

x 4.
Put the stock engine back in when for sale, and take your 'built' engine w/ you to the next one.
