It was on the machine....but not in use. Since it's a laptop I never had it plugged in anywhere. (I even have an external HD that is not even being used)
What's really stupid, we lost a HD in a PC years ago and that desktop is set up with an external HD that does a nightly automatic backup.....nothing on the macbook

You mean an Apple Broke? No way!
First I highly recommend using www.carbonite.com. I use it and it has saved my azz many times. It keeps up to 8 versions of a file so even if you overwrite a file by accident you can still go back and get what you need.

Music Rescue
There are a few programs that will copy the information from your Ipod back to your computer. I have used music rescue in the past and it was pretty easy to do.
http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/products/musicrescue/
Here is some more info on how to go about recovering from your Ipod and they list some other programs you can use.

You must be devestated having lost all those Sinead O'connor and Christopher Cross hits.
I do know that you can do it though because Kelli combined my brothers Ipod and Mine at one point a few years ago. I'll ask her when I get a chance....

Load a free small program call "sharepod" onto your computer and say good bye to Apples control of your ipod. You can load music, pics, movies, anything you want using Sharepod. You can take music from other ipods and add your music to others too. It's great

There are lots of great ideas already posted.
The only thing I will add, is that when you connect the iPod to the new Mac, it "should" ask you if you'd like to "merge" the songs from the ipod, with the songs in the library. If you choose "no", THEN it will delete all of the songs on the ipod.......so choose "yes", and it should load all of them.
Good luck, and remember to ALWAYS sync your Mac accessories as often as you can.
