Lanier Harbor Marina Poker Run 2002 Update
Forsyth County Child Advocacy Center named Official Charity of Poker Run 2002 on Lake Lanier

Lake Lanier Island, GA - - Summer is just around the corner, and for many, it’s time to get the boat out and enjoy the beautiful waterways in and around the Atlanta Area. For others, especially children and families who are victims of abuse, life is a different picture altogether. One that the Forsyth County Child Advocacy Center is trying to change, with a little help from the Lanier Harbor Marina.

"We wanted to give back something to the community we live and work in," said Barkley Geib, owner of the Lanier Harbor Marina, who says that proceeds from Poker Run 2002, will be donated to the Forsyth County Child Advocacy Center. This years event is slated for August 8th - 10th, 2002 on Lake Lanier. Geib says that a Las Vegas Style Casino Night will be held on Friday, August 9th at the Emerald Point Resort to benefit the center, and area residents are all encouraged to join in the fun. Tickets are $25.00 per person, which includes live entertainment, appetizer buffet and a raffle ticket for a chance to win the Grand Prize - a 2002 Vespa Motor Scooter, provided by Vespa of Atlanta. "There’s no better cause than one to help children, and you don’t need to own a boat to attend," he added. Michelle Edwards agrees.

"The Forsyth County Child Advocacy Center is a child friendly, homelike facility, created to provide support to victims of physical/sexual abuse and their families," said Edwards, Executive Director of the Center, also known as " A Friends House." Edwards says that the center works hand in hand with many local organizations and agencies, including law enforcement, the department of family and child services, the district attorney’s office, and the mental health, hospital and school systems. "The wisdom and professional knowledge we have available to us is key to designing systems to protect the children, and we are able to do so more timely and effectively by working together."
Edwards adds that help from local businesses through fund-raisers, such as the Lanier Harbor Marina Poker Run event, allows the facility to provide necessary items for the children and their families. When the opportunity came along to give a little more, the center was willing to go along for the ride.

"We are all very excited about receiving a donation of funds from the Lanier Harbor Marina Poker Run, but when the children heard that they would be going for a boat ride as well, it was the icing on the cake," said Edwards, who notes that for some, it will be their very first boat ride, ever. Geib says that world famous, powerboat racing dentist, Dr. Gerardo Santiago, will be on hand to give the children rides in his "Zero Cavity" raceboat, along with receiving a
toothbrush and an autograph on Thursday of the event.
