I'd guess probably 2's in amplitude. Wind follows me around, so that looks like way too many of my days on Lake St Clair w/ whitecaps.:eek:

The problem with wave heights is obviously that some people are describing "wave height" technically, and others amplitude. When people say they ran hard in 4's, I have to assume it is not amplitude usually.

It seems to me though that in spread rollers in the ocean, you can run faster in bigger waves as they are spread out nicely. On our lake the waves can get somewhat high, but they are close together. I can't run real fast in them to get too much air, but try to stay on top in the 50's.

looks like the broads out where the turn boat was for us offshore raced in the 90s and having been boating on there I would say 3 foot chop with a 4 footer here and there winds 25 plus . turn boat was good old mt washington 1971 was the 1st ride on that for me:coolcowboy:.

As a Former Navy SEAL, and being professionally trained, and having performed beach/ hydro graphic recons all over the world, I can say that MOST laymen measure wave height as twice it's actual size. Estimating wave height takes a lot of practice, and we spent many, many hours in the water, and on the water to master it. When on a small craft, it's best to use the boat, or yourself (imagine yourself standing in the trough) as a reference. Most of the time when someone posts a pic and says they were in X ft waves, they were actually running in 1/2 X ft waves.

This was the last UK race of this season going through part of the notorious Cowes Torquay Cowes route, it was for RIB's and the new 300 class P1 are promoting, which is the 26' Cougar built ex-Honda race boats and as can be seen by the photos it's rough so not sure what you guys would call this ... especially for racing in boats from 21' upwards :eek:...

In my experience the camera makes waves look much smaller so it's tough to tell from a picture.

Wave height it is measured from crest to trough.
