Default How many of you carry a spare prop onboard?

It's an expensive proposition, and one I am considering, though funds are quite low at the time. I touched bottom twice last year - only at idle, and all it did was nick the leading edge of the prop................ but there's always a first time.

Spare props...as far as I AM CONCERNED...don't mean crap. When I break...a prop is the last thing that needs fixed

Default spare props

I carry spare props. If you travel far from home port, it can really save you. One engine travel is painful for any distance. I also carry spare nuts and locks in case I lose one in the water while changing a prop.

A spare prop is cheap insurance. I carry my second best prop as a spare. WHen I bought the Spinellli I kept the original Bravo I instead of selling it. If I bend a blade or worse throw one I won't be in for a long tow or tempted to try to "make it home" on a damaged prop. I also carry a spare nut, lock washer and thrust washer.

I was wondering if it was necessary or not. I was thinking of getting one of those prop mounts for the engine compartment. Storing an extra prop is a pain. Do you think that if you hit a prop hard enough to render it useless the outdrive will not be hosed too?

Last year when I was running a poker run, I just happened to have two props with me. This is a pretty rare event but the prop that I wanted to use had a tough time getting on plane, and I wasn't sure how it would work in the rough water. Well, about halfway through the run, the prop threw a blade. I sure was glad that I just happened to have a spare one because it would have been a very long idle back.

I carry one of those COMPROPs from Overton's. It is made of plastic, is rated for 300HP, and will get you back to the dock in an emergency, and it does not weigh much, is not sharp, and will not do much damage if breaks loose in the engine compartment. I think they cost about $110 bucks.
