Hats off to Howard Arneson!
- Inventor
- Performance Boating, Record Breaker/Record Maker
- Never met him but from what I have read about Mr. Areson, a true Gentalman.

Was considering starting a new thread but found this. Such a cool story.
For discussion's sake, can/will this record be broken with modern performance or did Howard reach the limits of safety at speed on the Mississippi for that long of a run? Seems a bit of good fortune is certainly a big variable.
Thoughts?
BTW, original link is gone, but great write-up of the event here:

personally, i think today's boats, and engines could do it, however the biggest x factor would be the barge traffic, and the how fast you could really go, I think that if you had a helicopter scouting, i don't see why not.

The river channel is wide and plenty of room to run. The caveat would be time thru the locks. The large waves are directly behind the tow boat so I don't see that being an issue.

This is one of the records we will try with the new boat, it will be one of the hardest to beat long distance records. We will have the range and speed to beat it but the biggest problem for us will be debris floating down river. It will be just a luck thing if we make it with out hitting a log or other debris.

If memory serves me right, there are no locks below St. Louis so there wouldn't be any locks to go through.

Guess I need to see where the record is to and from. I'm used to boating in pool 18/19 on the upper. I thought the record was upper and lower Mississippi River but if it's just the lower then you are 100% correct PTM.
